Interview: S.C. Stephens

Jen: Today we welcome S.C. Stephens to Romancing the Book. S.C., will you share a short bio with us?
S.C.: S.C. Stephens is a bestselling author who enjoys spending every free moment she has creating stories that are packed with emotion and heavy on romance.

Her debut novel, Thoughtless, an angst-filled love triangle charged with insurmountable passion and the unforgettable Kellan Kyle, took the literary world by storm. Amazed and surprised by the response to the release of Thoughtless in 2009, more stories were quick to follow. Stephens has been writing nonstop ever since.

In addition to writing, Stephens enjoys spending lazy afternoons in the sun reading fabulous novels, loading up her iPod with writer’s block reducing music, heading out to the movies, and spending quality time with her friends and family. She currently resides in the beautiful Pacific Northwest with her two equally beautiful children.

Jen: Please tell us about your newest release and where the idea came from.
S.C.: Furious Rush is my latest release. While I was brainstorming ideas for a new series, my brother purchased a street bike. When I saw it, I couldn’t help but notice that the bike was super-sexy. I knew right then and there that my next story was going to revolve around motorcycles.

Jen: Are you a plotter or pantser?
S.C.: I try to be a plotter, but I’m naturally more of a pantser. I just don’t know how scenes are going to alter the story until I get there. I might have the main arc of the plot in my head beforehand, but everything can change at a moment’s notice.

Jen: How do you remember ideas that come to you at odd times?
S.C.: I have notepads stashed everywhere. I’ll think of something, and run to go find one, and I won’t let anyone talk to me until I’ve written down my thought. I’ve learned that I have to do it that way, because I won’t remember later.

Jen: What kind of research did you do for this book?
S.C.: The racing aspect of the book is loosely based on a real racing circuit—AMA Pro Road Racing. I downloaded their rulebook, race schedule, race results, rider profiles, and more. I devoured everything I could find, watched hours of YouTube vids…and then I ended up discarding a bunch of it for flow and pacing. It happens!

Jen: If this book was made into a movie, who do you see playing the main characters?
S.C.: I don’t usually write characters with actors in mind, but I did with this book. The final look of the characters changed throughout the writing process, but the original inspirations were:

Hayden Hayes = Scott Eastwood
Mackenzie Cox = Margarita Levieva
Myles Kelley = Dylan O’Brien
Nikki Ramirez = Gina Rodriguez

Jen: What’s been the highlight of you career to this point?
S.C.: Besides just getting published at all, Reckless hitting #1 on the New York Times list will always be a highlight for me. I never in a million years thought that would happen. I owe my fans so much!

Jen: What did you do to celebrate your first book? Do you do anything to celebrate a sale, new contract or release?
S.C.: It was a whirlwind of activity around my first release, so I spent most of my time just trying to stay on top of things. With the last two contracts, I’ve taken my kids to Disneyland. They’re very hopeful that I’ll get another contract soon!

Jen: Do you have a playlist for Furious Rush?
S.C.: I sure do. Here it is:

Jen: What’s next for you?
S.C.: I’m currently working on writing books 2 and 3 in the Furious Rush series.
