Jen: As part of our Entangled Takeover, we decided to interview a couple of their staff members. First up is Riki, one of the Entangled publicists. Riki, will you share a short bio with us?
Riki: My name is Riki Cleveland and I have had a long-standing love affair with all things books and writing. I indulged my love for all things literary with a degree in English Literature from Arizona State University and hold a certificate in novel writing from the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing. I actually began as a book blogger with a passion for romance novels and all things Entangled Publishing (can you say fangirl?), and I’m thrilled to now be a part of the Entangled team where I can spend my days spreading the love for Entangled authors. I loves a swoon-worthy adult romance and have a serious passion for the HEA!
Jen: How long have your worked for Entangled and what are your job responsibilities?
Riki: I have worked at Entangled Publishing for ten months, and I am the Entangled Publicist overseeing our Indulgence, Select Contemporary, Select Suspense, and Ignite imprints. Some of my various job responsibilities include creating marketing and publicity plans for our upcoming releases, as well as overseeing the execution of those plans. I also have the wonderful opportunity to work daily with bloggers and other industry reviewers, which is a highlight of my position.
Jen: How did you get into this job? What skills do you need?
Riki: I began working with Entangled Publishing on the editorial side as an Intern, where I worked for three years. After that, I worked with several smaller publicity companies gaining experience in marketing and publicity that directly prepared me to eventually apply for my current position.
Jen: What’s the best part of the job? The hardest?
Riki: The absolute best part of my job is working with authors and readers who love romance literature with so much passion! It is a dream come true to be part of the team that brings these amazing stories into the hands of readers. A huge perk of the job is also reading all of our books! (I told you I was an Entangled fangirl at heart!)
The hardest part of the job is probably managing my constant influx of email. LOL. Is that an okay thing to say? 😉
Jen: Any suggestions or advice to authors, bloggers or readers?
Riki: Advice I would give to anyone looking to secure a job in publishing is to first and foremost love books! Read widely and garner all of the experience you can in working behind the scenes. Internships are a fantastic way to gain that valuable experience!
And my advice for bloggers is to never be afraid to start at the bottom. I began as a book blogger with maybe four followers (all family!) but I kept working on building my review list and reaching out for review opportunities, and now I have almost 3,000 followers. I’m still a “small” blog, but we are a lively community!
Jen: What books are you most looking forward to?
Riki: A couple of books coming out that I’m so, so super excited for readers to love as much as I do are Naima Simone’s THE BACHELOR’S PROMISE (sexy, alpha male hero? Yes, please!) and Abby Niles’ KNOCKED OUT BY LOVE (highly emotional and sexy!)
