Interview: Lisa Orchard

20111210_ABS_1296[1]Jen:  Today welcome Lisa Orchard to Romancing the Book.  Lisa, will you share a short bio with us?
Lisa:  Lisa Orchard grew up loving books. She was hooked on books by the fifth grade and even wrote a few of her own. She knew she wanted to be a writer even then. Her first published works are the “Super Spies Series.” These stories revolve around a group of friends who form their own detective squad and the cases they solve. “The Starlight Chronicles,” is the next series that Lisa created with musical misfit, Lark Singer as her main character.

Lisa resides in Michigan with her husband, Steve, and two wonderful boys. Currently, she’s working on the next book in the Starlight Chronicles Series along with a few new ideas that may turn into stand-alone novels. When she’s not writing she enjoys spending time with her family, running, hiking, and reading.

Lisa:  Here’s the blurb for the box set that is currently on sale for $0.99.

Lark Singer is seventeen years old and already on the way to a brilliant music career. But as she and her band, Starlight, gear up for a competition, life seems to be throwing her a few curve balls. The mysteries of her past seem to be unraveling, and she’s no longer certain she wants to know those answers or how knowing about her past will affect her difficult relationship with her mother. And when her best friend, Bean, changes things between them, all her plans for a musical future are placed in jeopardy. How can she balance her complicated personal life to keep her musical goals on track?

Jen: How do you remember ideas that come to you at odd times?
Lisa: I remember ideas at odd times by writing them down on a grocery list or a small notebook I keep in my car. However, I know it’s a good idea when I can’t stop thinking about it. I work on the characters and their personalities in my head. I also think about the beginning to the story and the end. That tells me that I’ve got an idea worth pursuing. The whole thing just kind of percolates in my brain and then when I can’t keep it there, I start writing.

Jen: What kind of research did you do for this book?
Lisa: I had to do research for Lark’s guitar. I really wanted to find a special instrument she had to work hard for to get. In the story, nothing comes easy to her and I feel that makes her guitar that much more precious to her because she had to work so hard to get it. Her music is her way of dealing with a lot of the obstacles she has to overcome so her guitar is a very important piece of the story.

Jen: What’s been the highlight of you career to this point?
Lisa:  I would say the highlight of my career at this point is the fact that I get to present my writing at schools and I also organize writing workshops with other groups of kids. It is such an awesome feeling to see these kids get excited about writing and then to watch them grow as writers, it’s very rewarding.

Also making the Amazon bestsellers list was rewarding too, but in a different way. I like the author visits and writing workshops the best. I should have been a teacher!

Jen: What did you do to celebrate your first book?  Do you do anything to celebrate a sale, new contract or release?
Lisa: The family and I went out to dinner. My boys were so excited and then when I ordered some paperbacks it became real to them. My boys are so proud of my accomplishments and they encourage me every day to keep writing. My oldest has read the first two books in my Super Spies series and he loved them. My heart swells every time I hear that. His friends have also read them and they are so excited to know a real author. I hope that when they see me, an ordinary mom, writing that it gives them inspiration to chase their dreams as well.

Jen: What do you do in your free time?
Lisa: I spend time with my family. I absolutely love hiking in the woods, especially in the fall. I also run, I feel physical activity is good for the mind as well. I seem to work out plot points when I’m hiking or running in the woods.

I like to read too. Reading is a great way to relieve stress and I love getting lost in a book for a while. Some of my favorite authors are Stephen King, John Green, and Jody Piccoult.
