Interview: Susan Mallery

097-croppedJen:  Today we are excited to be a part of the Trill Me blog tour and welcome Susan Mallery to Romancing the Book.  Susan, will you share a short bio with us?
Susan: Susan Mallery is the New York Times bestselling author of more than 150 novels, including the uber-popular Fool’s Gold romances. Her latest book, Thrill Me, introduces the five fabulously sexy Mitchell brothers. Del Mitchell, the eldest, has just returned to his California hometown after making a fortune designing a sky surfboard that cemented his status as an extreme sports superstar. .

Jen: How would you describe Thrill Me?
Susan: Thrill Me is a story of first love reunited. When Maya Farlow was 18, she fell so hard for Del Mitchell that it scared her. Living with her stripper mom as she bounced from one bad relationship to another had taught Maya not to depend on anyone. If she married Del, as they had been planning, she might never achieve her dream of being a network news reporter. So she broke up with him and fled to college in LA. She broke his heart, and he never knew why.

Ten years have passed, and Maya is back as Fool’s Gold’s new Communications Director—the on-air reporter thing never panned out, though she did work as a producer on a Hollywood gossip show. Mayor Marsha asks her to produce a video to promote the town’s new slogan, Destination for Romance, with a smoking hot celebrity spokesman—Del Mitchell, who rose to fame in extreme sports.

Working on the video together forces Maya and Del to confront the truth that their feelings for each other never went away. If anything, they’re stronger than ever. But can Maya learn to make herself vulnerable, and can Del trust her not to break his heart again.

Thrill Me is passionate and emotional and so funny at times that you might just embarrass yourself with public outbursts of laughter. If you haven’t read any of the Fool’s Gold books, you can jump in here, and you won’t feel lost. Longtime fans will enjoy reconnecting with couples from previous books as Maya and Del interview them about how they fell in love.

Jen: Who are the Mitchell brothers?
Susan: Del is the eldest of five hot, single brothers, who will each fall in love over the next couple of years. These five men grew up in the shadow of their mercurial father, a world-renowned glass artist who would sometimes destroy a year’s worth of work in one fiery fit of rage. Which meant that he also sacrificed the family’s income for that year. The Mitchell brothers never felt completely safe as they grew up. Three of the brothers inherited Ceallach’s talent, but they struggle against emulating him in other ways.

In Thrill Me, readers will discover not one but two shocking secrets that will rock the Mitchell family to its core. All told with the emotion and humor readers love in Fool’s Gold.

Jen: Do you ever base characters on people from real life?
Susan: No, I’ve found that real people don’t work well in fiction. At least, not for me. I’m a little too soft-hearted to put people I know through the kinds of trials my characters experience. In real life, I want everyone to be happy all the time.

That said, people I’ve met have inspired certain aspects of characters. In Thrill Me, Maya is a smart, strong woman who knows her way around a video camera, and a skilled editor, too. That aspect of her character was inspired by a videographer in Seattle who does amazing work and whose can-do spirit I admire.

Jen: Do you have a certain reader in mind as you write?
Susan: I do. She’s a busy professional who spends her days giving everything she has to others—her family, her friends, her clients. She’s lucky if she can find fifteen minutes to relax with a book. Her reading time is precious to her. She worked hard to get where she is. She doesn’t regret her choices, but she wants to be someone else just for a little while. She wants a book that will take her out of herself. It might make her cry or it might make her laugh, but it will definitely make her feel. And maybe, just maybe it will give her new insight into other people’s hearts and minds.

Jen: What’s next for you?
Susan: After Thrill Me comes Marry Me at Christmas in October, a Fool’s Gold gift-sized hardcover. Readers have been asking for Madeline’s story for years, and now it’s finally her turn to fall in love—with, of all people, her celebrity crush. Jonny Blaze is one of the top action stars in Hollywood. Madeline can’t imagine that he would be interested in small-town, ordinary her, but Jonny wasn’t always famous, and what he longs for more than anything is a woman who will love him for who he is on the inside.

In 2016, I’ll release the second book in my Mischief Bay series, plus more Fool’s Gold—right now, I’m working on Aidan Mitchell’s and Shelby Gilmore’s story. And I also have something very exciting coming up in 2016 that I’m not ready to talk about yet. If you want to be one of the first people in the know, sign up for my mailing list at
