Interview & Contest: Crissy Smith

crissysmith_resizedJen: Today we welcome Crissy Smith to Romancing the Book. Crissy, will you share a short bio with us?
Crissy: I live in West Texas with my wonderful family which consists of my husband, teenage daughter, and three Labrador retrievers. By day I can be found buried under piles of paperwork as I try to navigate in the accounting world but at night I’m at my laptop, creating new paranormal worlds that I hope to intrigue and excite readers with. I’m an avid reader so if I’m not writing I gobble up as many books as I can. My goal in life is to offer my readers an escape and a little piece of comfort as I myself have found in my favorite authors’ books. I have two long running series with Totally Bound and I invite you to pick up one of the stories and try your hand at a new paranormal romance.

You can find out more about me and my past, current, and future books at either of my websites:

Jen:  Tell us about your newest release.
Crissy: When I was asked by Totally Bound to be involved in their new imprint What’s her Secret? I wanted to write something different from my usual style while still remaining true to what I wanted to write. I love everything to do with paranormal romance and I still think there is a place for good, exciting, character driven books in the genre. So I asked myself, what would happen if a woman made a mistake? For the first time in her life she went home with a man from a bar that she didn’t know. When she wakes her entire world has been changed. We found out her backstory in my short story prequel, Last Call. In was in that story that we were first introduced to Piper and Jace and came to understand how they came together.

Designated Alpha is a full length novel and can be enjoyed on its own, but to see the start of their love story go and pick up Last Call.

In Designated Alpha Piper knows she’s lucky to have Jace by her side. He accepts the animal inside her and wants to ensure her safety and happiness. To do so, Jace believes that Piper needs to stop thinking of her abilities as a curse and embrace the wolf.

Designated Alpha is action packed and one intriguing ride. As soon as you think you know which side the players are on—the tables get turned. The love between Piper and Jace is raw and flaming hot. You won’t be disappointed when you pick up this book.

Jen: What what age did you discover writing?  Tell us your call story.
Crissy: I discovered writing at an early age, it comes from having a dad—who while unpublished—never gave up on the craft. As a child my nightly routine consisted of my dad reading me a bed-time story. I fell asleep listening to the latest chapter of his book each night. So it was natural for me to make up stories of my own. I have spiral notebooks full of stories from when I was a young girl. Although I didn’t really consider writing as an option until 2007 when I was at a job that only required me to answer phones. In an attempt to keep myself amused I started to write once again. Luckily I found Totally Bound in 2008 and have been at home with them ever since. I now have thirty two books published.

Jen: Are you a plotter or pantser?
Crissy: I’m a combination of a plotter and a pantser. Each time I start a new story I open a new notebook. If I am writing as part of the series I normally have already introduced the readers to the next main character and write down his description and character traits. Once that’s done I choose my main character’s relationship partner. After that I set up my story plot around one of them, it can be a job, a relationship, or a difficulty they are facing. Next, I write a couple paragraphs or a blurb. Now it’s time to write. I do not plot any of my chapters. I just start typing and let the story flow through me.

Jen: Is there a genre you’d like to write?  Is there one you’ll probably stay away from?  Why?
Crissy: As you probably have already figured out I am a paranormal genre freak, but let me explain why. When I was younger there weren’t a lot of young adult stories that held my interest. I wanted mystery and suspense. I wanted to be shocked. I loved being taken to a new world where anything is possible. I found myself reading paranormal books almost every time. These adventures allowed me an escape from the real world that can often be harsh and confusing to a young girl. I could imagine myself in these faraway places or new dimensions that allowed me to be free. So naturally when I began writing as an adult this is the genre that I was drawn to. I have written contemporary titles but my favorite will always be my stories that have a paranormal element to them. I will say that there is no genre that I will never write. I am open to whatever my muse tells me needs to come out next.

Jen: What’s the most interesting comment you’ve received about your books?
Crissy: One of the most interesting and best comments that I’ve gotten about my books came from a reader at RT2015. When she told me that when she reads my books and not only do the characters come alive but the settings do too—I knew what I had been trying to accomplish in bringing my readers something special was finally happening. She mentioned the coffee shop in Pack Hunter. How she could picture the small shop and all the patrons and staff. How the description of the different types of coffee had her almost able to smell the strong brew, I was so happy. I want to give my readers more than just a good read. I want them to invest their time in my books and get something out in return. Even if it’s just a short escape from life.

Jen: What’s next for you?
Crissy: I am still working on my two series I have with Totally Bound. The Were Chronicles continues with book thirteen; Pack Balance. Pack Balance releases September 15 and will carry on the steamy romances and mysterious plots of the other books:

Were Chronicles series:

Hot Alpha males and feisty females set the pages on fire as they clash and struggle to belong and find that one special mate.

Shape-shifters who cannot shift, attacks on packs, coming out to the world, The Were Chronicles will take you through the lives of Pack members who fight for who and what they want.

Nothing is more sacred then the one person who completes them.

Through betrayals and lies these strong willed females and fully dominant males must find a way to protect what’s really important. Love.

My second series the Shifters Chronicles is gearing up for some crazy times. Book five releases July 28th. Coyote’s Kiss brings the Shifter Coalition into close contact with agents from the FBI and ATF. They’ll have to fight together if they want to find a way for humans and shifters to live in peace.

Shifter Chronicles series:

The shifters around the world have announced their presence and revealed their secrets. Birds, bears, cats, coyotes and more must work together in the new founded Coalition to protect one another. Along the way, they’ll find love, suffer loss, and show everyone what the shifters are really made of.

This spin off series to the Were Chronicles will take you into the lives of each shifter faction and prove once again that nothing is impossible when you have love.
