Interview & Contest: Victoria Vane

Victoria in Jackson HoleJen: I had the pleasure of meeting Victoria a little over a year ago and at that time she was excited about having just sold her western series to Sourcebooks. And now we’re excited to welcome Victoria to Romancing the Book as the first of those westerns hits the shelves. Victoria, will you share a short bio with us?
Victoria: Victoria Vane is an award-winning author of smart and sexy romance. Her works range from historical to contemporary settings and include everything from wild comedic romps to emotionally compelling erotic romance. Her books have received more than twenty reviewer awards and nominations to include the 2014 RONE Award for Treacherous Temptations and Library Journal Best E-Book romance of 2012 for The Devil DeVere series. Look for her hot new contemporary cowboy series coming from Sourcebooks in Fall of 2014.

Jen:  Tell us about your newest release and where the idea came from.
Victoria: SLOW HAND is the first title in a hot new contemporary western series set in Montana and Wyoming. The “story behind the story” is that my friend and beta reader loves contemporary romances and hounded me for two years to write one. I kept telling her that it wasn’t my thing and that I didn’t have the right voice for it, but she finally wore me down until I agreed to give it a try.

I chose cowboys as I have been a lifelong horse owner/lover and have known many of them. Many other elements of this first book are actually highly biographical. The heroine’s childhood, family issues, even the mean boss, and her father’s death are all quite close to home. Even my hero, Wade, is named after one of the first guys I had a girlhood crush on. He was also a cowboy! This made it easy to write about and I hope for others to relate to, especially the part about losing her ID. What a nightmare that would be! The fictional part is of course the romance but don’t we all dream of a cowboy like Wade? He was very much the prince charming to my damsel in distress.

Jen: Are there any other writers, published or not, in your family?
Victoria: Yes. My husband and his best friend have co-written a fantasy novel that is yet unpublished.

Jen: Is there a genre you’d like to write? Is there one you’ll probably stay away from? Why?
Victoria: I am very much in love with historicals- both historical fiction and historical romance. I have a proposal for a historical series with strong romantic elements that I hope to sell in the coming year. If not, I may indie-published it. I also would like to try my hand at a military romance. I never would have thought I could pull that off but I my cowboy series also includes two Marines so who knows? Although I write hot, I could never see myself writing pure Erotica/GBLT, Cozy Mysteries, or Urban Fantasy. Anything else I might be willing to try.

Jen: If you were able to travel in time, where would you go and what 3 things would you take with you?
Victoria: Anyone who has read my historicals knows that I’m enamored with Geoegian England so that is where I would go. I would take lots of money and jewelry as the rich were very comfortable and the poor were miserable. I can’t think of anything else to take!

Jen: What’s the most interesting comment you’ve received about your books?
Victoria: It always surprises me when people think I’m descriptive because my books actually have very little description. I think the readers get that impression because I try to be very vivid with the descriptive narrative that I do write.

Jen: Who has influenced you as a writer?
Victoria: In my historicals, Georgette Heyer and Robin Schone have both been very  influences,  Georgette for over the top characters and witty dialogue and Robin for sensuality. I can’t really think of any one author who has influenced my contemporary stories.

Jen: What’s next for you?
Victoria: My editor at Sourcebooks is already interested in a 5th book that would feature Nikki’s mess of a sister, Shelby, from SLOW HAND.  I also have a super hot Las Vegas set contemporary novella series coming in early 2016 from Kensington that also features cowboys! Lastly, I hope to release at least one historical in 2015, Ned’s Folly which would be the 9th installment in my ongoing Devil DeVere series.
