Review: I always scoff at kitchen gadgets like this. I have a knife, why would I need a banana slicer? Now, having used it, I can definitely see it’s potential.

The slicer makes nice even slices, approximately 1/4” thick. This is the perfect thickness for so many things – pies, cereal, chips and, of course, feeding the baby or the dog. It’s extremely easy to use – just squeeze your hand around it and banana slices! I’ve found it works better on firmer bananas. The riper a banana gets, the softer it gets. While the slicer still works, the slices are a little ‘mushy’ and harder to handle. I’m also thinking it would work on other fruits as well, as long as they fit into the circle of the slicer.

One thing to watch for – the slicers are very sharp. Be careful when handling it and don’t let young fingers near it. I’m keeping mine in the box it came in just so I don’t inadvertently reach into my drawer and slice my finger.

Now, the reason I was happy to have such nice, even slices is that I absolutely love banana chips and this gave me a perfect reason to try making my own. They’re delicious! Here’s the recipe:

Honey Banana Chips

  • 2-3 bananas
  • ¼ cup honey
  • ¼ cup lemon juice

Preheat oven to 175F. Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking sheet.

Mix the honey and lemon juice.

Slice bananas and dip into the honey mixture. Pat dry with a paper towel and place on baking sheet, ensuring the slices are not touching (so they don’t stick together).

Bake for 1-2 hours. (The longer the baking time, the crisper the chip.) Let cool for 20-30 minutes. The chips will harden as they cool. Store in an airtight container.

Note: For crispier chips, use greener bananas. For sweeter chips, use riper bananas.
