Interview & Contest: Torie James

Torie James author picJen:  Today we welcome Torie James to Romancing the Book.  Torie, will you share a short bio with us?
Torie: Torie James has loved reading since she was old enough to hold a book in her lap. While her friends were out playing, she was generally curled up nearby falling down rabbit holes, catching second stars to the right, and stepping through wardrobes into mysterious lands and countless adventures. When those stories ended, she made up her own and kept going. This later on translated into a strong passion for writing that has helped her keep her feet on the ground while her head stayed firmly in the clouds. Lover of Dr. Pepper, all things chocolate, and Duran Duran, her dreams finally became a reality with the publication of Timeless Night and Timeless Desire, Books One and Two the award winning New Camelot Series.

Jen: Tell us a little about your newest release.
Torie: I’m terribly excited to share my short story, Point of No Return, with the world. It’s been a bit of an odd duck really, something I’d been meaning to try and give voice to and a Halloween submission seemed to be the kick I needed. It’s a prequel of sorts and I’m outlining the full length novel to follow. My main protagonist, Avan, is the only daughter of the Devil himself and determined to show good ol’ Dad she can run the family business with elegance and efficiency. After all, if you want a job done, get a man. But if you want it done right, you’ll get a woman. The only fly in Avan’s ointment is that both Heaven and Hell are conspiring against her. I’d gotten the idea from watching a double header of The Devil’s Advocate and Bedazzled and not too long after that, I’d been invited to participate in a flash fiction blogfest for Halloween last year. So, I tossed in a small story about my girl Avan who was having a really weird day. This story picks up 4 years later and I’ve incorporated the flash fiction portion without too much fuss.

Here’s a short excerpt:

She enjoyed being a highly sexual female who felt no shame in shagging a man for recreational purposes. Guys did it all the time and they were called studs. A woman with the same goal? Slut. Luckily, she didn’t much care what anyone thought. She had no desire to settle into a bullshit relationship where she lost her identity. Her mother had schooled her. She was an island and it suited her fine when the occasional ship came into port, docking on a temporary pass. A lustful interlude with a masked stranger on Halloween? Cliché. And tempting. She did have a few extra minutes.

Then he filled her vision and she felt her body grow damp under the heated gaze.

One. Quick. Shag.

Medicinal purposes only.

He opened his mouth to speak and she shook her head. “Shh. Don’t talk. You’ll ruin it.”

Jen: Are there any other writers, published or not, in your family?
Torie: Yes, indeedy! My sister, Wendy, is a writer as well and I couldn’t be prouder! She’s had a few articles published in anime magazines and is shopping her first book, My Beloved Demon, around different publishers. I stick to the safe stuff, mainstream. Wendy’s genre is specialized and I just know she’s going to light it up!

Jen: Are you a plotter or pantser?
Torie: Total panster. Even if, in some mad lucidity, I ‘plan’, I never stick to the script. Chaos would be a step up, but it is what it is and that’s how I roll.

Jen: What’s the most interesting comment you’ve received about your books?
Torie: “Hey, TJ. I just finished your book. I’m impressed. It doesn’t suck.” From my best guy friend. Believe it or not that IS a compliment coming from him.

Jen: What do you do in your free time?
Torie: What is this free time you speak of?

Jen: If you were able to travel in time, where would you go and what 3 things would you take with you?
Toriw: Ohhh! I’d go to Scotland in the 1600s because I’m simply in love with that place. I want to build my own castle someday! *taps chin* Hmmm. Breath mints, toilet paper and my nifty little skean dhu (black dagger) because a girl can’t be too careful with all those roguish knaves running about!

Jen: What’s next for you?
Torie: Up next for me is Book 4 of my New Camelot Series, Timeless Passion. I just finished Timeless Seduction, Book 3 and am currently working my first revisions before submission.
