Readers who love vampire romances will be thrilled to devour Team Human by Justine Larbalestier and Sarah Rees Brennan. Team Human celebrates and parodies the Twilight books, as well as other classics in the paranormal romance genre.

Mel is horrified when Francis Duvarney, arrogant, gorgeous, and undead, starts at her high school. Mel’s best friend, Cathy, immediately falls for the vampire. Cathy is determined to be with him forever, even if having him turn her could inadvertently make her a zombie.

And Mel is equally determined to prove to her BFF that Francis is no good, braving the city’s vampire district and kissing a cute boy raised by vampires as she searches evidence in this touching and comic novel.

Review: This is not your normal teen vampire story. But instead it is a parody of all vampire stories past and present.

I didn’t know what to expect only to find that I enjoyed this story. Sometimes you get tired of all the vampire stories that are out there wishing that someone would come along and change it up. Ms. Larbalestier and Ms. Rees Brennan did just that. They took all the vampire stories past and present rolling them into a really fun and light hearted spoof of life as a vampire. If that wasn’t enough they added a way to transition into a vampire that isn’t like how you would expect.

Instead it is monitored by the government with three things that could happen (because it isn’t perfected…if it were we would all be vamps); first you could die…second you could become a zombie (forgot to mention the zombies) and then die and lastly you could become a beautiful vampire live forever never getting to eat chocolate ever again. What no chocolate you say? I think I will stay a human. In this story humans live together without too many problems. They even went as far as changing things up by putting a human boy in a vampire home where he was raised by the vampires and they never forced him to become one of them. It is his choice to make if and when he wants. No pressure…

New boy in school is your typical (remind you of anyone) silent, brooding, mysterious and of course good looking vampire along with two good friends one eats, drinks and sleeps vampire (she would actually make it her occupation if it were possible) and the fun loving non-vampire lover who cares allot for her friends; at times not knowing if and when she should back off letting them find their own way in life.

Ms. Larbalstier and Ms. Rees Brennan work well together as writers blending their styles in such a way that you can’t tell when one stops and the other starts in the thought process and writing process. It was almost as if they were the same person. I enjoyed their unique twist by turning this into more of a parody by making fun of all the other stories out there and referencing them in the story. One thing that was fun was that instead of just romanticizing the vampires they actually put a teen love story within the plot which you might miss if you just center yourself on the vampires.

Overall I think that you might actually be surprised at how fun and warm this story is. If you want to get deep into it you find that this is life and you just have to deal with it whether you like it or not.
So if you are a vampire lover or not you will enjoy this creative collaboration Team Human for what it is a nice lighthearted, fast paced read to take your mind off of everything.
