Anniversary Interview & Contest: Lisa Renee Jones

Jen:  It’s day two of our look at contemporary erotica and today’s guest is Lisa Renee Jones.  Amy jumped at the chance to interview Lisa, so the blog is all yours.

Amy: Tell us a little about yourself and where you can be found online.
Lisa: New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author Lisa Renee Jones is the author of the highly acclaimed INSIDE OUT SERIES, and is now in development by Suzanne Todd (Alice in Wonderland, Austin Powers, Must Love Dogs) for cable TV. Amy: Please tell us about your newest release and where the idea came from.
Lisa:   My Control is the latest novella in the INSIDE OUT series. It’s also the third installment in Mark Compton’s point of view in the series that leads into my next release, I Belong to You that comes out November 18th, which is the final book in Mark’s view. Then the series will wrap up with All of Me in February. I can’t give too much away about My Control specifically because I don’t want to spoil anything for new readers, but the series tells of a prim and proper school teacher, Sara McMillan, who inherits a storage unit full of Rebecca Mason’s belongings. Sara reads Rebecca’s journal and relates to how the other woman has feared her dreams but chased them despite that fear. The journal is filled with the erotic remembering of Rebecca and a man who lived for control and dominance. When the journal ends ominously, Sara begins to fear for Rebecca’s life. She seeks her out, but is unable to find her. Somehow Sara begins living Rebecca’s life without meaning to, becoming involved with the same people Rebecca had been, and even working at the same art gallery. Sara becomes involved in a triangle with two men in particular, and is intimately drawn to one of them.

My Control is further down the line in the series, and concentrates on Mark’s story. A lot of very big things happen leading up to My Control. Things that threaten Mark, and his reality. As well as a haunting past he has to come to terms with. So getting into his point of view, versus Sara’s which the other books are written in, gives the readers real insight into who he is. I Belong to You will be the closure to his story, and readers will absolutely get their questions answered.

As for the inspiration to this series, it was a long time in the making. It actually began when my husband, Diego, and I used to action hunt, Storage Wars style. In one of the units he found this journal. Keep in mind it wasn’t nearly as scandalous as Rebecca’s journal from the series, but he became absolutely immersed in this woman’s life. He kept telling me “Lisa, you have to write this!” It took a year or two to fulfill my other publishing duties, but in that time his idea took root and these characters were just screaming to get out once I finally say down to pen the idea.

Excerpt from My Control, Mark’s POV

This wasn’t smart. Drinking and bringing her here. It’s as if I invited her to see me in the most screwed up of ways. My jaw clenches, muscles tense. My mind might be numb, but my body is one big live nerve ending. I’m coming out of my skin. I’m going insane. I did this. I created the monster that is [name removed to avoid major spoiler] and now I want to torment Crystal by using her to deal with the guilt.

I need to move. I need something before I lose my mind, and I try to push to my feet. Crystal’s hand closes over my arm, stilling me.

Concern is etched in her eyes, and I hunger for her in this moment in a way I have never hungered for anyone before. My hand tangles in her hair and I drag her mouth to mine. “I am bad for you,” I say. “I’m—”

“Wrong for me. Using me. I know—and I don’t care. But use me to deal with the guilt—not to create more.”

“Why would you willingly do this?” I need to know that she’s in the right place, that I’m not going to hurt her, too.

Her hand settles on my chest, over my heart that I know is thundering. “Because,” she says, her voice even, confident, “sometimes what someone is going through speaks to you on a level you can’t ignore. And because of that, people who’re completely wrong for each other are completely right in a certain moment in time. Like us right now.”

I’m kissing her before she finishes her last words, my mouth slanting over hers, my tongue licking against hers in a hot stroke, followed by another. Turning her onto the couch, I lay her down, resting on top of her, and I’m no longer thinking about all the reasons this is wrong or the way it’s nothing like what I normally want or need. But I do need. I need this woman here, now, and with the kind of abandon I rarely allow myself. No amount of booze will stop how deep the burn runs. How intense the rush of desire.

This moment. This woman. It’s what I need. She is what I need.

Amy: Chris vs. Mark?
Lisa: I love them both, but I have a special spot in my heart for Chris, but I think many people will be shocked about who the real Mark is when I BELONG TO YOU releases on Nov. 18th in his point of view. You will get ALL his many secrets.

Amy: Name the three most important items in your purse?
Lisa: Lipstick always, my wallet which I love to leave on the bathroom sink so I can embarrass myself, and powder because you have to moisturize insanely here in the high altitude.

Amy: Five adjectives to describe you.
Lisa: Loyal, dedicated, obsessive, caring, blessed

Amy: Favorite memory with your fur baby.
Lisa: There are so many and right now she is battling cancer so I think every little thing she does is so very special. We walk her. She doesn’t need a leash. She just walks with us and it amazes people. She comes when we tell her to come. People in the neighborhood know us as Julie’s humans 🙂

Amy: Describe your dream pair of shoes.
Lisa: Well, I love every kind of shoes, so that is hard. But a pair of heels with an ankle strap always gets a high mark from me. No pointed toes.

Amy: Most challenging book to write?
Lisa: The one I’m writing at the time is always the hardest so I’ll say FORSAKEN is currently tying me in knots.

Amy: Would you rather go out in public with no makeup or messed up crazy hair?
Lisa: I’m a makeup girl, I tend to always have some on but I wouldn’t freak if I needed to go out without it. And in Colorado with the wind we always have crazy hair. I don’t use heavy hair spray for that reason. It just makes your hair a ratted mess.

Amy: Favorite coffee?
Lisa: White chocolate Mocha

Amy: If you could create a bumper sticker, what would it say?
Lisa: Back that ass up

Amy: Fifty Shades — thumbs up or down?
Lisa: Thumbs Up. I enjoyed it and felt it was at it’s core a love story and sex was simply how Mr. Grey coped with his past. The story was not the sex. The story was what made sex such a focal point in his life.

Amy: What’s next for you?
Lisa: The INSIDE OUT series is about to wrap up. It’s so incredibly hard to let these characters go, because I’ve been with them for so long, but I’m also thrilled to give readers the end and the answers they’ve been looking for. So, I Belong to You will come out in November, then All of Me which is the final series wrap up, is out in February.

I also have the next book in my Tall, Dark and Deadly series that is slated to come out in March called Deep Under. You actually get to see a lot of the Tall, Dark and Deadly characters in the later books of the Inside Out series, especially Blake the (the hero from Beneath the Secrets) because he plays a key part beginning in Book 2, Being Me. From there, I have a few things in the works, nothing I can share officially yet, but hopefully soon! I can tell readers that Ella, a ley character, of sorts, in the Inside Out series will be getting her own series. No dates yet. Then the other burning question I get a lot is about Forsaken, the third book in my Secret Life of Amy Bensen series, news about this is coming VERY soon. As in in the next week or so. I’m just waiting on the final say so from my publisher 🙂

Then there’s the TV show for Inside Out that’s in development with Suzanne Todd! I could not be more thrilled or excited about this project. And to have such an amazing production team at the helm, is truly a blessing. I’m dying to be able to share news about that with my readers. What I can tell you is that they have an amazing show runner, and there’s already 10 episodes written! I get asked daily about the when, where, and who, and I can’t answer those questions just yet, but again, I’m hoping to be able to very soon!

My perfect guy is less talk and more action. Confident but not cocky. A leader but a team player too. He says what he means, and means what he says. Honest, has good humor, he listens.
