Gena Showalter is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author whose books have appeared in Cosmopolitan and Seventeen magazines, as well as Entertainment Weekly. Her novel Red Handed has been optioned by Sony Television. Critics have called her books “sizzling page-turners” and “utterly spellbinding stories,” while Showalter herself has been called “a star on the rise.” Her mix of humor, danger and wickedly hot sex provides wildly sensual page-turners sure to enthrall.
Jen: Please tell us about Burning Dawn and where the idea for this book came from.
GS: Inspiration for Burning Dawn came from the hero, Thane. This immortal warrior with an insatiable need for violence showed up in two other Angels of the Dark books (Wicked Nights and Beauty Awakened) and I fell head over heels for him. He is the most dangerous assassin in the skies. And, yeah, okay, some of his savagery is directed at his lovers. But they like it! Honest! Still, he has always feared becoming the very evil he fights against…though everything changes when he meets Elin Vale, a vulnerable beauty who will shred every bit of his iron-hard control. For the first time in his life, he has no desire to hurt, only to pleasure, and he has no idea how to deal. His journey touched my heart, and telling his story proved to be both heart-wrenching and fun for me.
Jen: How is the Angels of the Dark series connected to the Lords of the Underworld?
GS: Both series are set in the same world, where demons stalk more than just the night and Sent Ones (angelic warriors with a dark side) police them.
Jen: How did you think up the Lord of the Underworld characters and world?
GS: Everything began with the grain of an idea. An immortal warrior cursed to die every night only to wake up the next morning knowing he had to die again (The Darkest Night). The world and characters grew from there.
Jen: You write both YA and Adult books. Is it easier to write one over the other? Why?
GS: For me, the ease or difficult of a book has never depended on whether or not it’s adult or young adult, but rather how well I connect to the world and its characters.
Jen: Out of all of your own characters, is there one you connect to the most?
GS: William has been my favorite since the moment he stepped onto the pages of The Darkest Kiss. He takes nothing seriously—well, nothing but the condition of his hair. He will stab his friends as easily as he will stab an enemy. He has a warped sense of humor. He sleeps with anything breathing, and sometimes even that isn’t a requirement. He is a mystery. He has never been in love, thinks himself immune… and yet I know he will fall harder than any of the other warriors.
Jen: Did you/do you have a mentor?
GS: I have my writer’s friends, and I’m so, so grateful for them! They help build me up whenever I’m down.
Jen: What’s next for you?
June 2nd will mark the e-book reissue of my Alien Huntress novella, TEMPT ME ETERNALLY.
June 17th will mark the e-book reissue of TEMPTATION IN SHADOWS, one of my favorite novellas.
On September 30th, THE QUEEN OF ZOMBIE HEARTS will hit bookstores everywhere.
In the stunning conclusion to the wildly popular White Rabbit Chronicles, Alice ‘Ali’ Bell thinks the worst is behind her. She’s ready to take the next step with boyfriend Cole Holland, the leader of the zombie slayers… until Anima Industries, the agency controlling the zombies, launches a sneak attack, killing four of her friends. It’s then she realizes that humans can be more dangerous than monsters; and the worst has only begun.
As the surviving slayers prepare for war, Ali discovers she, too, can control the zombies and she isn’t the girl she thought she was. She’s connected to the woman responsible for killing–and turning–Cole’s mother. How can their relationship endure? As secrets come to light, and more slayers are taken or killed, Ali will fight harder than ever to bring down Anima…even sacrificing her own life for those she loves.
Then, on November 25th, THE DARKEST TOUCH (a Lords of the Underworld novel) will arrive. The synopsis for THE DARKEST TOUCH:
Fierce immortal warrior. Host to the demon of Disease. Torin’s every touch causes sickness and death—and a worldwide plague. Carnal pleasure is utterly forbidden, and though he has always overcome temptation with an iron will, his control is about to shatter.
She is Keeleycael. The Red Queen. When the powerful beauty with shocking vulnerabilities escapes from a centuries-long imprisonment, the desire that simmers between her and Torin is scorching. His touch could mean the end for her, but resisting her is the hardest battle he’s ever fought—and the only battle he fears he can’t win.
Then, 2015 will mark the start of my new contemporary series, The Original Heartbreakers, as well as a new young adult series.
