Interview & Contest: Jennifer Ryan

ae731bb5c9d60ad8976fee_L__V376040025_SX200_Jen:  Today we welcome Jennifer Ryan to Romancing the Book as her blog tour makes a stop with us.  Jennifer, will you share a short bio with our readers?
Jennifer:  Jennifer Ryan, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Hunted Series, writes romantic suspense and contemporary small-town romances.

Jennifer lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and three children. When she isn’t writing a book, she’s reading one. Her obsession with both is often revealed in the state of her home, and how late dinner is to the table. When she finally leaves those fictional worlds, you’ll find her in the garden, playing in the dirt and daydreaming about people who live only in her head, until she puts them on paper.

Please visit her website at for information about upcoming releases.  She can also be found on Twitter and Facebook.

Jen:  Please tell us about your newest release and where the idea came from.
Jennifer:  Falling for Owen – Book 2: The McBrides

Owen McBride has a problem. A client who needs him just a little too much with an ex-husband who wants him out of the way so his wife will come back to him. When the ex-husband seeks retribution against Owen, he gets the wrong address and nearly kills Owen’s neighbor, Claire. The incident sparks something in Owen and he vows to keep her safe.

Here’s the official blurb:

The McBrides of Fallbrook return with reformed bad boy Owen. He’ll do whatever he must to protect the woman who’s captured his heart. Attorney by day, rancher by night Owen McBride conquered his dark past and made it his mission to help the innocent—even at the expense of a personal life. But when a client’s abusive ex-husband targets Owen and his gorgeous neighbor Claire gets caught in the crossfire, his feelings turn anything but professional. The mysterious beauty awakens something in him, and he’ll move heaven and earth to keep her safe.

Coffee shop owner Claire Walsh learned the hard way that handsome men aren’t to be trusted. Owen may be sexy as hell and determined to take care of her, but she’s reluctant to put her heart on the line. His presence in her life puts a target on her back, yet the more time she spends with him, the more she finds she can’t help falling for Owen.

Jen:  Are you a plotter or pantser?
Jennifer:  Pantser. When I start a new novel, it’s usually the opening scene I have in mind. From there, the story unfolds for me. In Falling for Owen, I got about two-thirds through the book and everything took a turn I never expected.

I’m also a binge writer. I can write for hours when things are flowing. I love those days.

Jen: Do you have a writing routine?
Jennifer:  Cup of coffee or tea. Cookies or chocolate. A movie I’ve seen a million times on in the background. My kids think I have a superpower – I can block out everything when I’m writing and get completely lost in the story, but I always have those three things when I write.

Jen:  How do you remember ideas that come to you at odd times?
Jennifer:  I have a notepad app on my phone. I type in title ideas and whatever spark of inspiration strikes. There are some random things in stored in there that probably make no sense later, or turn out to be absolutely ridiculous, but sometimes there’s a real gem in the bunch.

Jen:  How do you come up with characters names?
Jennifer:  This is the one thing about writing that takes me forever to do. Seriously, I could write a whole chapter faster than I can name characters. When a story hits me, I usually have no idea what the character names are. If people looked at my search engine history, they’d probably think I’ve been pregnant for years, I search baby names so often.

Jen: Do you have a favorite character or one you most identify with?
Jennifer:  I really identify with Rain in The Return of Brody McBride. She’s a woman who will do anything for her kids. She’s got a kind heart and a toughness about her that sees her through everything, including losing the love of her life and raising her two girls on her own, until Brody comes home to her. Oh, she’s not easy to convince to give him a second chance, but for her love is unconditional.

Jen:  What’s been the highlight of your career to this point?
Jennifer:  Saved by the Rancher – Book 1: The Hunted Series hit the New York Times bestseller list two weeks in a row. There is no better feeling as a writer than seeing your book on that prestigious list.

Jen:  What’s next for you?
Jennifer:  Dylan’s Redemption – Book 3: The McBrides is available August 4, 2014. In 2015, I’ll release a new series of three books – The Montana Men.
