Interview & Contest: Julie Ann Walker

Julie Ann Walker & Jen at AAD Savannah, August 2013

Jen:  I had the pleasure of meeting Julie Ann Walker at the Authors After Dark Convention and now we are excited to have her join us at RtB as she celebrates the release of Born Wild.  Julie Ann, will you share a short bio with us?
Julie Ann: Julie Ann Walker is the New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author of the Black Knights Inc. romantic suspense series. She is prone to spouting movie quotes and song lyrics. She’ll never say no to sharing a glass of wine or going for a long walk. She prefers impromptu travel over the scheduled kind, and she takes her coffee with milk. You can find her on her bicycle along the lake shore in Chicago or blasting away at her keyboard, trying to wrangle her capricious imagination into submission. Look for the first five books in her fast-paced series: Hell On Wheels (August 2012) In Rides Trouble (September 2012) Rev It Up (October 2012) Thrill Ride (April 2013) and Born Wild (November 2013). For more information, please visit www.julieannwalker.com or follow her on Facebook www.facebook.com/jawalkerauthor and/or Twitter @JAWalkerAuthor.

Jen: Please tell us about your newest release and where the idea came from.
Julie Ann: Born Wild is the book Black Knights Inc. fans have been waiting for.  The hero and heroine, Wild Bill Reichert and Eve Edens, have been dancing around each other since the second book in the series.  Readers have an inkling there’s history between the two… deep, dark, delicious history-MEOW!  And in Born Wild they finally, finally get to find out what all the hot fuss is about.  And it is hot, even if I do say so myself.  LOL!  *fans face*  Like all the books in the series, readers can expect sexy motorcycles, heart pounding mayhem,  a bit of mystery, and tons of sexual tension.  Haven’t jumped on the BKI bandwagon?  Well, now’s your chance!

Jen: At what age did you discover writing?
Julie Ann: Oh, my goodness!  I’ve been writing as long as I’ve been reading.  Which would be about thirty *mumble, mumble * years.  My mother, an elementary school teacher who knew the power of the written word, enrolled me in a book club before I even started kindergarten.  A new book would arrive in the mail at the first of every month, and I would ravenously devour it in one sitting.  Then I would laze about wondering what happened after “the end.” Next I started writing about what happened after “the end.”  So, I guess you could say I began my writing career by penning Beverly Cleary fan fiction!  Oh, Beezus and Ramona – not to mention Ralph Mouse – were such fun characters to take on new adventures!  LOL!

Jen: Describe your writing in 3 words.
Julie Ann: Catherine Mann said it best I think… Alpha, Edgy, and Hot!  Thanks, Cathy!  *waves*

Jen: How do you remember ideas that come to you at odd times?
Julie Ann: That lovely little invention called the smart phone has been a game changer for me.  Now, when a new idea pops into my head, I just type myself a reminder in my “notes” application and my iPhone automatically sends me an email.  How convenient is that?  And how in the world did I ever live without it?

Jen: How do you come up with characters names?
Julie Ann: I’m strange in that my characters tend to pop into my head fully formed, foibles, strengths, weakness, and names completely intact.  There are times I wish that wasn’t the case.  I think I’d like to angst about character names like some authors I know.  That way I could give them really awesome handles like “Demetrius” or “Alistair.”  Aren’t those yummy sounding?  Alas, so far none of my characters have come to me with those kinds of names…

Jen: Do you have a favorite character or one you most identify with?
Julie Ann: It’s funny, but the character I most identify with is Ethan “Ozzie” Sykes.  He’s a bit of a nerd.  I’m a math major – enough said.  He’s a trekkie.  *raises hand in the Vulcan  greeting signal*  He loves to quote moves.  (That rug really tied the room together.)  And he’s in love with 80’s music.  (Pat Benatar, Quiet Riot, Journey… anyone?  Anyone?)

Jen: What’s next for you?
Julie Ann: Oh, I’m so glad you asked!  Hell for Leather, the sixth book in the Black Knights series, debuts early summer 2014.  It features ex-FBI agent Bryan “Mac” McMillan and the super sexy bartendress we’ve all come to know and love, Delilah Fairchild.  I won’t give too much away, but readers can look forward to a chill-inducing terror plot, flying bullets, an attempted abduction, and some sexy times that are so hot my fingers darned near caught on fire while I was typing them.  *wink*

So excited to finally get to read Billy & Eve’s story – been looking forward to finding out more about both of them and their past since In Rides Trouble. Can’t wait for next year to learn more about Delilah & Mac – what great characters they are! Love this series and all the characters you have created!

i havent read any of julie ann’s books as yet so i would love to win so i can have a chance to correct that

    • I’m a HUGE Green Day fan. (Did I just date myself with that?) And I think Billie Joe Armstrong not only sounds awesome-sauce live, but he and the band put on one hell of a show!

  3. Lynn says:

I have been waiting and waiting for Bill and Eve’s story. And I am so glad to hear BKI won’t end with Bill and Eve but go on. Delilah’s story should be awesome!

  4. jennifer rafuse says:

    Hi Julie

I was wondering if you have a person that you look up to or go to advice when you are writing a book or is there someplace speical that you like to go to write and get your inspiration from?

    • What a great question! My husband is a fount of inspiration when it comes to “guy-isms.” You know those one-liners guys use around each other? I’m constantly taking notes when he’s around.

  5. Shawnie Nicole says:

Bills coming tomorrow.. I’m so damn excited.
I’ve been a fan since I did the marathon read of the first three books in order to catch up so I could read the fourth book when it came out.

  6. Kate Mann says:

Julie, I just love, love your books and all of your characters, and their stories are really great! But I wish we didn’t have to wait so long in between books, I want to read them all at once!

  9. Donna Antonio says:

I too had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Walker at Authors After Dark and had a blast talking to her. I love her BKI books

  10. Kim Urban says:

Ali and Ghost were my favorite couple until Rock and Van came along, I can’t wait to see if Billy and Eve knock them out of that#1 spot! I love this series!

  11. ~justine L. says:

I saw above that there is more BKI on the way, YIPPY! But r there any new series or stand-alones in the works? I need to know how much ur gonna cost my husbad this up coming year, and just how ‘good’ im gonna have to be.

    • Justine, there are two BKI books coming out in 2014. HELL FOR LEATHER in May and FULL THROTTLE in December. Then, depending on negotiations, the first book in my NEW series (yes, that’s right) could debut between those two. Woot!

  12. Kylan says:

This series sounds great. I am always looking for new authors to read because I have re-read every book I own. 🙂 I tend to buy every book by an author I like. I *may* have an addiction but I am not ready to admit that yet! 😉

  13. Hi Julie!

When you’re in the middle of writing one of your mega-awesome books, have you ever had to wrangle your characters to go in a different direction than what they’re whispering in your ear because you know, ultimately, that the story needs to arrive at a certain spot? How did you work through that?

    • I’ve tried to wrangle my characters, but they never behave. So, I’ve learned to just go where they’re determined to take me and adjust MY way of thinking about what the end should be. Yes, that’s right. I’m a slave to my characters… *hangs head in shame*

  14. Angela Love says:

  15. Pam Batchelor says:

I can’t wait to read Delilah’s book! Do you ride motorcycles yourself? What was the draw to you writing this series?

  16. Stacey Langkamer says:

I tore threw the first two books couldn’t read them fast enough. Now I am taking my time until I start the next two. I just don’t want it to end.

  17. Ashley says:

I bought the first couple of books to take with me on vacation to Costa Rica earlier this year on a whim. Thanks to you Julie, I never left the beach (well I don’t know if that’s a good thing or bad because I sped through) Then after I finished, I really wanted to get to a bookstore so I could get the rest of them. I can’t wait to read Born Wilde and hear what has been happening with the gang!! Congrats!!

  18. Elizabeth Gray says:

Love the interview. Julie is a new author for me, but this sounds like a great series. I have a few, just need to move them up in the tbr pile. Hope there are many more in the series to come.

  19. Diane Sallans says:

I really need to get into this series! It looks so exciting, but with a sense of humor thrown in to the serious circumstances.

  20. Krista Nutter says:

I just wanted to say that I love the BKI books and the character development that goes into each one. It’s rare that I get emotional while reading a novel, but I always find myself tearing up while reading yours. My favorites are Hell on Wheels and Thrill Ride – simply for that reason – they had the most emotional impact on me. (Well I mean, come on – Nate and Rock? YUM!) I’m a sucker for stories about men who serve or served our country, probably because so many of my family members have, and I love the rough edge that your books have, that some of the more “softer” romances don’t (life isn’t all hearts and flowers, warm and fuzzy, right?). Thanks bringing us such wonderful reads, and definitely keep them coming. You’re one of my new favorite authors!

  21. Amber says:

I just read the first in this series and absolutely adored it! I cant wait to read the rest! Thanks! 🙂

  22. Sebella Blue says:

I love the whole concept of the BKI series. I found the series when I picked up a copy of Rev It Up in a used book store. I fell in love with Jake on the cover. I was well and truly hooked, so of course I had to have the rest of the books. They are so dogearred now, that a good wind would blow them apart. I’m so excited about the release of Born Wild I just can’t stand it.

    • LOL! I LOVE hearing that, both about the used book store and about your copies being dogearred! So glad you’re enjoying the series. I’m having a helluva good time writing the books.

  23. Vicki P says:

Yeah for elementary school teachers! I remember belonging to a similar book club when I was younger, and though I didn’t become a writer, I hope I encouraged many young people to love reading!! Love your Beverly Cleary fan fiction comment!! Too funny!

  24. Angela Holmes says:

I think the saying ‘the pen is mightier than the sword’ is very apt. Great authors can develop stories and characters that make your imaginations go into overdrive. They evoke emotions in us that we may very well think we didn’t have or held so deep that no-one could see them. They spark our own imaginations and use of words and creativity. Thank You Julie for sharing your gift with the rest of us. I for one appreciate it.

  25. Glittergirl says:

    Hey Julie (waves)
This series has everything I love to read ~ motorcycles, ex-military alpha men, thrills, hot guys, romance dodging bullets, lol. Thanks for sharing your crazyness with us readers ;-).
I’ve been looking for you to have a chat party at Discover a New Love (Sourcebooks ebook website) but you’ve not shown up recently. Well, nobody has been there since Sept 5th…What gives? Do you know when the site will be back posting again. I thought since they are your publisher you might have some inside info. I’ve loved getting your books there at a discount and chatting with other authors. I hope it’s going to be going forward, I’ve told so many friends to check it out! That’s where I discovered you 🙂

      • Glittergirl says:

Awesome Julie. I just love Discover a New Love and the site hasn’t posted or updated since 9/5 with the winners of the Aug 28th Chat…I want to “renew my membership” and pick up a few “free” books but they haven’t posted Nov releases yet and it’s the 5th already. It’s a wonderful site and I’ve discovered so many new to me authors ~ you included. I’d love to continue…

  26. Damaris says:

I enjoy your facebook posts. It’s great seeing all the places you travel. I was wondering which genre do you enjoy reading from and what you’re currently reading.

    • I try NOT to read in my genre. I don’t want to sound too much like another author or be influenced by their stories. So, currently I’m reading the third book in a urban fantasy series called COLD BLOODED. And I just downloaded Jill Shalvis’s newest cozy, comfy, contemporary.

  27. Tina says:

Love your books–fav characters so far–Becky and Frank. What inspired you to write about motorcycles and spec ops groups? How much research do you have to do for the books? How long does it take you to write? Keep up the good work. Looking forward to buying your next book tomorrow.

    • I do quite a bit of research, actually. Whether it’s traveling to the locations I set my books in, or getting the lingo, weaponry, and gear correct by talking to soldiers, I try to get the details as correct as I possibly can. And I usually finish a book every four months. Three books a year seems to be my sweet spot.

  28. Jen B. says:

I raise my hand in the Vulcan greeting right back at you. I have been wanting to read this series but the fact you are a Trekkie and a math nerd has made me move them up on my list!

  29. Phyllis Marshall says:

I just recently found you, Julie Ann, and I have devoured all the BKI books in about 2 weeks. (Had to stop to go to work, clean, cook…you know..) Now I am waiting til midnight to get Born Wild on my KIndle! Have to say that I love your ‘voice’ in telling a story and your characters run true for me. I appreciate the humor, turmoil, the 80’s music, the angst, sexual tension and just, well, everything!

  30. Theresa Ann Fischer says:

I have read all the Black Knights books and love them! Thrill Ride is my favorite. Looking forward to reading Born Wild.

  31. Shannon Burdsall says:

I read the first two in the series but I really need to get the rest and then start from the beginning again! I love the first two and look forward to reading the rest. Thanks for the giveaway!

  32. erinf1 says:

Congrats Julie on your series! I haven’t had a chance to read it yet but I’m dying to 🙂 Thanks for sharing! My question: what is the one thing that you have to have/do while writing?

  33. Shelee Juarez says:

I absolutely love your books Julie! The suspense, intrigue, romance, badass-ery (is that even a word?) of the heroes…Do you find inspiration for the heroes in anyone in particular (celebs, real people, people of history)? And thanks for the great chance to win too 🙂

  34. Susan T. says:

Enjoyed the interview. I’ve only read the first 2 books so I’m a little behind on this series. How many books are planned for Black Knights Inc?

  35. Raonaid Luckwell says:

I am anxiously awaiting to read my hot Ozz man singing Meatloaf’s Paradise by the Dashboard light, girl vocals and all! * Laughs * That makes me giggle like a kid everytime I think about it. Gotta love Ozzie. It’s cool too that it takes place in Chicago, a place my hubby grew up in. Been there twice.

  36. Chris Bails says:

Wow, those are some sexy covers. I am going to have to check these out. You are a new author for me. I love to read and always looking for new books to check out. I especially love series, so another plus for me. The whole set would be awesome. Thanks for the awesome giveaway. Loved the post and these books are definitely on my reading radar.

  37. Maureen says:

It looks like a great series and this newest book sounds intriguing since the couple has a past together.

  38. donnas says:

I have heard so many great things about this series. I cant believe I havent read it yet. Need to get to it asap.
