Interview & Contest: Donna Grant

donna_grant_newJen: Today we are excited to welcome Donna Grant to Romancing the Book. Donna, will you share a short bio with us?
Donna: Donna Grant is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of more than forty novels and novellas spanning multiple genres of romance.

She was born and raised in Texas but loves to travel. Her adventures have taken her throughout the United States as well as to Jamaica, Mexico, and Scotland. Growing up on the Texas/Louisiana border, Donna’s Cajun side of the family taught her the “spicy” side of life while her Texas roots gave her two-steppin’ and bareback riding.

Her childhood dream was to become a professional ballet dancer and study under the amazing Mikhail Baryshnikov. Though she never got to meet Baryshnikov, she did make it to New York City and performed in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Later, Donna’s love of the romance genre and the constant stories running through her head prompted her to sit down and write her first book. Once that book was completed, there was no turning back.

Donna sold her first book in November 2005 while displaced from Hurricane Rita, a storm that destroyed portions of the Texas Gulf Coast. Since then, Donna has sold novels and novellas to both electronic and print publishers. Her books include several complete series such as Druids Glen, The Shields, Royal Chronicles, Sisters of Magic, Dark Sword, Dark Warriors, and her new series, Dark Kings.

Despite the deadlines and her voracious reading, Donna still manages to keep up with her two young children, four cats, three fish, and one long haired Chihuahua. She’s blessed with a proud, supportive husband who loves to read and travel as much as she does.

Jen: Please tell us about your newest release and where the idea came from.
Donna: My newest release is MIDNIGHT’S CAPTIVE, the 6th book in the Dark Warriors series featuring immortal Highland Warrior Charon, and his heroine Laura.

The idea for this book came when I knew it would be set away from MacLeod Castle where most of the others books had taken place. Since Charon owned many businesses, I thought having Laura work with him would something different that I hadn’t touched on before.

Jen: Are you a plotter or pantser?
Donna: Panster all the way. I can semi-plot an overall series arc, but I can’t plot the books. I just sit down each day and see where the characters take me.

Jen: Describe your writing in 3 words.
Donna: Dark. Sexy. Romantic.

Jen: Do you have a writing routine?
Donna: I do actually. I find that I write the best in the mornings first things. So, I make sure I get my page count out of the way before I do anything else.

Jen: How do you remember ideas that come to you at odd times?
Donna: For me I find that writing them down does no good. I have to find a creative way of matching ideas to characters, and then I just keep playing the scene over and over in my head until I can get to the book. Once, I had a scene in my head for over three years before I got to write it.

Jen: What’s next for you?
Donna: Next is the final two books in the Dark Warrior series – MIDNIGHT’S TEMPTATION (Oct 1st) and MIDNIGHT’S PROMISE (Oct 29th). I have a Christmas novella involving the Dark Warriors, and then the print version of the Dark Kings novellas (a spin off of the DW series) coming December 31st with the title TBD.

    Congratulations Donna!
I’ve noticed most authors use word count for a daily goal. Why not page count?
