Jen: Today we are excited to welcome Kate Deveaux to Romancing the Book. Kate, will you share a short bio with us?
Kate: KATE DEVEAUX is a contemporary, erotic romance writer and die-hard romantic. It was after reading Jane Eyre in high school, that she became hooked on the idea of writing about romance, excitement and drama. Kate has been penning stories, from the sensual to the sinfully sexy, ever since!
In addition to red-hot romance, Kate’s fictional stories explore the dynamics of why relationships do or don’t work, the choices people make, family dramas and the unexpected events that set everyday life on its head. She is currently busy completing two erotic romance novels and one contemporary romance novel for release in 2013 — each filled with sexy romance, heroines who are no shrinking violets and heroes who make your heart skip a beat.
A former wedding planner, Kate has always been “in love” with love. Born in London, England, Kate has lived in both the U.K. and the U.S and she is a graduate of the University of Alberta in Canada. She and her husband currently reside in Arizona. When she’s not writing or reading, Kate can be found on the tennis court—yes, there’s even “love” in that game too! For more about Kate, please visit:
Jen: Please tell us about your newest release.
Kate: My newsest release is the Butler Did It, part of the At Your Service Anthology. It’s a twist on the Downton Abbey and the Upstairs Downstairs themes, but this time it’s a modern day romp. Just what goes on behind closed doors, after hours, between modern day servants and their employer?
In the case of the Butler Did It, I decided to make the boss a woman who struggles with control issues, and I set the story in a swanky Miami penthouse, rather than a stuffy manor house.
Work soon turns to play when Vivienne Martin, successful fashion mogul meets, her sexy new Butler, Clarkson Dale, for her new Miami home. Vi can barely get him out of his Ermenegildo Zegna suit fast enough. She’s a woman who is used to getting what she wants and when she reveals her deepest fantasies to Clarkson, he rises to the occasion. Sometimes breaking the rules can be so much fun.
Jen: Are you a plotter or pantser?
Kate: I’m a plotter. I jot down notes on story ideas whenever I get them and then once I’m ready to start a new book, I’ll flesh the notes out with an outline, and then a story arc. For each book I write, I keep a notebook on that story with all the pertinent info, characters names, dates, turning points, family trees, and maps for fictional towns, etc.
Jen: Is there a genre you’d like to write? Is there one you’ll probably stay away from? Why?
Kate: I love writing stories about characters and their relationships, and I love a racy read, so I mostly write erotic romance or sexy romance. Most of my books are very descriptive, whether that is sexual or just sensual; I’m a detail person. J I see myself continuing with the erotic and contemporary romance genres, as those are my favorite to write. I most likely wouldn’t write science fiction as it’s not a genre I’m drawn to or read.
Jen: What did you do to celebrate your first book? Do you do anything to celebrate a sale, new contract or release?
Kate: My first book sale was amazing. After several years of writing, I got the call for a two-book deal and then another book deal within weeks of that one — it was my lucky moment for sure. How did I celebrate? Once I stepped off Cloud Nine, I went to the nearest department store and treated myself to a new pair of bright red shoes with a bright red bow; flirty and sexy, plus they make me a much-needed 3” taller. What more could a girl ask for? I plan to keep the tradition until I run out of closet space!
Jen: What do you do in your free time?
Kate: I love to play tennis when I have time, and to cook and entertain friends with a wonderful meal (Barefoot Contessa is my foodie idol). I’m always keen to travel and see new places; next on my list is Provence.
Jen: What’s next for you?
Kate: I’m just finishing up an erotic romance, Bimini Bound, set on a private yacht in the Bahamas as well as another erotic romance Valentine’s story featuring mistaken identity. I have an exciting list of ideas for upcoming books and a few sequels, so keep on the look out for those.
I also have two releases coming out later this year, Academy of Love and Sail Away With Me, both sexy romance, which is very exciting and a few new works underway. I am just finishing up Bride Undone, an erotic romance about a bride to be who never makes it down the aisle and winds up in the arms of the most unlikely hero.
