Interview & Contest: Sara Humphreys

Sara Humphreys 2Jen: Please help me welcome Sara Humphreys to Romancing the Book. Sara, will you share a short bio with us?
Sara: Sara is a graduate of Marist College, with a B.A. Degree in English Literature & Theater. Her initial career path after college was as a professional actress. Some of her television credits include, A&E Biography, Guiding Light, Another World, As the World Turns and Rescue Me.

She is the President of Taney Speaker Training, which specializes in public speaking, presentation development and communication skills training. She has trained executives at Verizon, Bristol-Meyer Squibb, Westchester County and the United States Navy. Her speaking career began with Monster’s Making It Count programs, speaking in high schools and colleges around the United States to thousands of students.

Sara has been a lover of both the paranormal and romance novels for years. Her sci-fi/fantasy/romance obsession began years ago with the TV Series STAR TREK and an enormous crush on Captain Kirk. That sci-fi obsession soon evolved into the love of all types of fantasy/paranormal; vampires, ghosts, werewolves, and of course shape shifters. Sara is married to her college sweetheart, Will. They live in Bronxville, New York with their 4 boys and 2 insanely loud dogs. Life is busy but never dull.

Jen: Please tell us about your newest release and where the idea came from.
Sara: UNDONE is the fourth novel in the Amoveo Legend series. I wanted to explore the idea of pairing a pureblood Amoveo with a human and I thought it would be fun to have the human be a guy. I also wanted to introduce my vampires in NYC and this book was the perfect opportunity to do that.

She’s Far From Human…

With her secret race of shapeshifteres embroiled in civil war, all Marianna Coltari wants is to stay far from controversy. Even so, when her overprotective brother insists on hiring his human friend Pete as her bodyguard, Marianna is furious.

Does She Dare to Love One?

Like most retired cops, Pete Castro resents his new job as a bodyguard. It’s even worse because he’ll be babysitting a party girl like Marianna. But that’s before he meets her for the first time and discovers his instincts on red alert. Would he kill to protect her?

Jen: Are you a plotter or pantser?
Sara: I was pantser when I first started but contracts and deadlines have made me a plotter. Although, once I start writing things often change. For example, when I was writing UNDONE, I had a character show up halfway through the book and it changed the game completely.

Jen: Describe your writing in 3 words.
Sara: Sexy brain candy.

Jen: How do you remember ideas that come to you at odd times?
Sara: I have a notebook in my purse and by my bed. I’ll jot down ideas there or I’ll make a voice recorded note in my iphone.

Jen: Is there a genre you’d like to write?  Is there one you’ll probably stay away from?  Why?
Sara: I’m intimidated by the idea of writing historical romance. I feel like I’d have to do an enormous amount of research and that no matter how much I tried, I’d miss something. I’ll leave that to talented writers like Grace Burrowes and Shana Galen. I will, however, be branching out and writing a contemporary romance series for Sourcebooks called Holding Out for a Hero.  Each book will feature a man in uniform! More info to come about that series soon.

Jen: What’s next for you?
Sara: The first book in the Dead in the City vampire series will be out in August. Tall, Dark, and Vampire features Olivia Hollingsworth. She’s the head of an all female vampire coven in NYC and readers get to meet her in UNDONE. I also have a self-published spin off series called Princes of Hell and that will debut in June or July. It features a character named Asmodeus who is also introduced in UNDONE.

  2. Hi Nicole! So glad you enjoyed TDV. The second book in that series is VAMPIRE TROUBLE and it will be out July 2014.

    • My characters totally talk to me and I love it when new ones show up out of nowhere. That happened with Asmodeus and now he’s getting his own book.

  3. Anne says:

Dead in the City sounds like it’s going to be a new take on the vampire genre with this all female group. Will they be a$$kickers like the Amoveo guys or have special powers beyond the usual vamp’s?

    • Hi Anne! Some of them are butt-kickers right off the bat and others have to discover their butt-kicking skills. As for their special powers….I can’t tell you too much because I don’t want there to be any spoilers. All I’ll say is this…when a human is turned, whatever powers they possess grow exponentially when they become vamps.
Part of my vampire lore that might be different from others is that according to their legend, some vampires have a bloodmate. If they find and bond with their bloodmate then both vamps can become daywalkers–vampires who can walk in the sun.
      I hope you’ll check it out 🙂

I have not read your work yet, but after reading this I would have to say I am very interested! I for one love vampire and paranormal books and always look for a new interesting read 🙂

    • Hi Heather,
I do hope you’ll check it out and if you love vampires, UNDONE has some of that 🙂 Hope you’ll love my shifters too.

  5. Maria D. says:

Thanks for the fun and informative interview with Sara – very nice to know she married her college sweetheart:) I haven’t had a chance to read any of Sara’s books yet but I am definitely intrigued by the “Amoveo” books and I like the sound of the upcoming “Dead in the City” series books and the upcoming contemporary “Holding Out For a Hero” series – I like both paranormal romance and contemporary romance! Oh…and my crush was always on Spock….lol…never on Kirk…..lol

    • Hi Maria-Thanks for swinging by here today and it would be lovely if you tried the series…and loved it. Have you seen the new Star Trek? OMG…it’s SO good.

  6. Glittergirl says:

I discovered you and your books at Sourcebook’s Discover A New Love. Your story ideas have intrigued me and I’m a huge Trekkie too. I love mixing Sci Fi and paranormal with romance, the author can reach “outside the box” and her imagination can go winging. I love that. I wish you well with your new release.

    • Hi Glittergirl–I’m so psyched you found my work on DANL. Isn’t that a fab book club?! Thank you for the well wishes and I hope you’ll enjoy UNDONE!

  7. Amanda Brown says:

    Hi Sara,

I’m in the process I writing my first two romance books. I find it hard to find the time to sit down and write with all my other obligations. My question is how do you manage your time as a writer?

    Thanks so much, Amanda

    • Hi Amanda–Congrats on embarking on this crazy journey of romance writing. As for finding the time….that depends. When I worked full-time I would write way late into the night and even when I was bone tired. However, now that I write full-time I’m able to stick to more traditional work hours…unless I’m on deadline. LOL

  8. Leanna H says:

I always have a notebook eith me yo write foen nots for myself like you do. I am surprised more writers don’t do this. I love leaving notes on my phone as well. This book is going on my wishlist.

  13. Tina Post says:
