Jen: Today we have a Authors After Dark feature for you. Please help me welcome Ann Mayburn to Romancing the Book! Ann, will you share a short bio with us?
Ann: With over thirty published books, Ann is Queen of the Castle to her wonderful husband and three sons in the mountains of West Virginia. In her past lives she’s been an Import Broker, a Communications Specialist, a US Navy Civilian Contractor, a Bartender/Waitress, and an actor at the Michigan Renaissance Festival. She also spent a summer touring with the Grateful Dead-though she will deny to her children that it ever happened.
From a young age she’s been fascinated by myths and fairy tales, and the romance that often was the center of the story. As Ann grew older and her hormones kicked in, she discovered trashy romance novels. Great at first, but she soon grew tired of the endless stories with a big wonderful emotional buildup to really short and crappy sex. Never a big fan of purple prose, throbbing spears of fleshy pleasure and wet honey pots make her giggle, she sought out books that gave the sex scenes in the story just as much detail and plot as everything else-without using cringe worthy euphemisms. This led her to the wonderful world of Erotic Romance, and she’s never looked back.
Now Ann spends her days trying to tune out cartoons playing in the background to get into her ‘sexy space’ and hopes to one day be able to use the bathroom without interruption from a kid, cat, or dog.
Ann loves to talk with her fans, as long as they realize she’s weird and that sarcasm doesn’t translate well via text. You can find her at:
Jen: Please tell us about My Wicked Nanny and where the idea came from.
Ann: I’ve always loved older man/younger woman stories so when I had the chance to write one for my ‘Club Wicked’ series I decided to pair it with one of my other favorite tropes, the innocent young nanny with the older handsome widower. I wanted the story, at its core, to be a very sweet love story. The kind of love story that makes you end the book with a happy, satisfied sigh. Fortunately for my readers, I’m an erotic romance author so while they got their sweet Nanny/Boss love story, they also got a whooolleeee lotta steamy sex. Real steamy. Like OMG I need to drink holy water to purify myself steamy.
Jen: Are you a plotter or pantser?
Ann: I’m a plotter who doesn’t follow her own outlines. I’ll have the book all worked out in my mind, but when I start writing characters will often hijack the story and take it in a totally different direction.
Jen: Do you have a writing routine?
Ann: I put on my headphones and let myself get carried away by my music station of choice on Pandora. I’ve found that different books require different music. For example, My Wicked Nanny has some really steamy sex scenes and I found music by Nine Inch Nails really worked well for setting the tone.
Jen: How do you remember ideas that come to you at odd times?
Ann: Strangely enough I have no problem remembering ideas for books. It’s remembering anything else that is an issue. 😉 I can tell you the color of shirt my first character wore in the first scene of my first book but I can’t remember that tomorrow I have a dentist appointment.
Jen: How do you come up with characters names?
Ann: I have a ‘Big Book of Baby Names’ from when I was pregnant. I’ll open up three random pages and pick a name from there.
Jen: What do you do in your free time?
Ann: What is this free time you speak of? I have three little boys so my free time is going to the bathroom by myself. 😉 I’m one of those people that can’t just sit down and watch a TV show/chill. I have to be doing something so I have a bunch of hobbies. My artistic interests are all over the place. I crochet, cross stitch, make dreadfalls, garden, make jewelry and a bunch of other things. The kid that wanted to learn karate then the very next week was begging her parents to put her in tap class? Yeah, that was me. 🙂
Jen: What’s next for you?
Ann: My next release is ‘My Wicked Devil’, book 3 in the Club Wicked series. This is my take on the opposites attract traditional storyline. But instead of good girl bad boy or some of the other more well-known pairings, I went with a fiercely independent woman, Kira, and a controlling man, Bryan. Oh, and did I mention that Bryan is a sadist? Wait! It’s not what you’re thinking, well maybe it is but let me remind you that the center of the story is a very sweet and traditional romance. Here, maybe the blurb will help explain it. 😉
After a motorcycle accident left professional stuntwoman and world famous actress Kira Harmony with a fractured pelvis, she cannot have sex without pain. Unwilling to give up on her dreams of someday having a normal love life, she has come to Wicked, the best BDSM Club on the East Coast, to find a Dom. And not just any Dom. Kira is looking for the best sadist she can find, a Master who can help her learn how to turn her pain into pleasure and help her escape the prison her body has become.
Lord Bryan Sutherland has always had a taste for meeting the needs of masochistic submissives. When Kira contacts him, her plea for his help intrigues him. While they have an explosive chemistry together, he doesn’t know if it’s possible to establish the kind of bond needed in order to train her mind to convert agony into ecstasy. That trust is sorely tested when Kira pushes herself too far and refuses to safeword out.
Bryan must make a decision, continue to train Kira and run the risk of seriously hurting her…or walk away from the woman who holds the key to his wicked heart.
