Former aristocrat turned lowly vampire Devlin Dalcon gets by on his supernatural charm, swindling others for money and goods. When Devlin encounters bride-to-be Annabelle—another potential victim—he finds the tables have turned as he falls in love with her.

Review: The first thing that captured my attention was that this book was written from the man’s point of view. I really wanted a change and this seemed like a perfect way to shake things up a bit. This short story is related to Promise Me Series by Tara Fox Hall.

Devlin Dalcon is the main character and he drew me in like a moth to the flame. Devlin’s feelings for Annabelle were clear and powerful. I was envious of her from the start. The heroine Annabelle is not a character I admired right away. It was difficult for me to find what it was about her that was so special that Devlin was willing to risk so much. There were a few unexpected twists and I always enjoy those.

The story itself was beautiful and captivating. Having finished this short tale I am now compelled to find out the complete story and will be finding the rest of the series. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing it told from the heroes’ perspective and I hope that I can find more books written from this viewpoint. Tara Fox Hall has used her amazing talent to compress a huge amount of content and passion into a wonderfully written short story. If you love a love story you need to read this.

Favorite Quote: “If I refused to go with you, what would you do?” she whispered.

“I’d stay here, and let the sun have me,” I said despondently. “Now that I’ve finally cared for a woman, I don’t see the point of continuing, unless you’re with me.”

  1. Thank you so much for this wonderful review, Patti. You have made my morning!
In addition to my thanks, I wanted to also post a brief response. The Promise Me series is mostly written from my heroine Sarelle’s perspective, though I often switch to the male perspective for short stories like “Partners” and “Heart’s Bells,” two other Promise Me short stories. The exception will be book #5 of the Promise Me Series, Immortal Confessions, which will be told exclusively in first person by Devlin Dalcon. Surrender To Me is an excerpt from Immortal Confessions. That larger work tells the much bigger picture of how Anna first caught Devlin’s interest, and his admission of his love for her…as well as everything that happened after, which is alluded to in the other Promise Me Books. Where Surrender to Me & Immortal Confessions take place in the early 1800s, the events of Promise Me take place in present day.
My first Promise Me Anthology will be out in late summer/early fall, and it will include the two short stories listed above, as well as several new ones! 🙂

Life has been beyond chaotic. But I am hoping to get the rest of this series when I finally get the time to read it all. Right now I can barely meet my deadlines for the books I have promised to read.
