Lady Olympia Wherlocke has the gift of foresight. When Lady Agatha Mallam asks Olympia to locate her brother so he can rescue her from an arranged marriage, she knows exactly where to find Lord Brant Mallam, Earl of Fieldgate. What happens next is something she never envisioned…

Since his betrothed died, Lord Brant Mallam has drowned his sorrow with wine and women. His dissolute ways have only emboldened his calculating mother. But with the help of the enchanting Olympia, he concocts a daring plan to end his mother’s devious designs for his sister. While each step in their bold scheme works to perfection, the sins of the past could unravel a growing desire that neither Olympia or Brant can control…

Review: Hannah Howell is a longtime favorite of mine and her “If he…” series set in Regency England is each sitting on my bookshelf as well as on my ereader.

We’ve been introduced to Lady Olympia Wherlocke in each of the previous books. She’s by far one of my favorite characters. A strong woman who I originally thought was around thirty because she was so firmly on the shelf in the previous books. In truth we find out that she was quickly married and then almost immediately after a widow at 13. She’s in her early twenties in truth. The story behind her quick marriage and widowhood are a big part of what makes up why she is not currently married nor pursued any affairs. And per the course as in previous books, when someone comes seeking help from a cousin who isn’t available she can’t turn the young woman away.

Because of Olympia’s unwillingness to break a promise to a young girl who needs not just her help but that of her debauched older brother Olympia just may learn that she’s not “tarnished” after all.

Lord Brant Mallam is a self-loathing hero that has just the right amount of neediness and maleness. He did walk a fine line between blaming himself for his deranged mother’s choices and feeling guilty for what was truly his accountability. But we would need a man like that for such a strong female character like Olympia.

It’s almost impossible to give a very detailed review without creating spoilers. And I’m not a reviewer who will do that.

Nevertheless, this is one of my utmost favorite books and I’ve read it again and again already.
