Can you give one guy your heart and another your soul?
The last thing eighteen-year-old Breena Cross needs in her life is more complications. It’s all she can do to balance studying, working, trying to keep her foster-sister safe and drooling over the new guy at work. But things go from complicated to crazy when a fit of rage ignites the dark magic inside her and she finds herself fending off the supernatural underworld.
Myles, Breena’s drool-worthy coworker and vampire convict, is carrying a load of secrets–one of which is that he’s fang-over-lip in love with Breena and in danger of violating the terms of his sentence.
Orin is a soul-hungry assassin sent to kill Breena. However, he takes one look into her eyes and sees his own lost humanity. For once thinking of someone other than himself, he chooses not to end her life, even though it means risking his own.
Despite a convict and an assassin fighting over her, all Breena wants is custody of her sister. But to do this, she will need help from both Myles and Orin. And if Breena doesn’t learn to control the darkness within, she could lose her sister…forever.
Review: Karen Y. Bynum is to YA Paranormal what peanut butter is to chocolate – they just fit and create all sorts of lusciousness!
First of all, yes, this is one of my absolute favorite genres, so I was extremely excited to get my hands on a copy and delve in. I was not in the least bit disappointed! There is the over-played love triangle, however that did not detract me from loving the story and the characters. I actually found myself going back and forth between the two love interests of Orin and Myles – what a yummy sandwich that would be to be caught between! Myles is the trust-worthy, loyal character who is hot hot hot – oh, yeah, and he is a vampire with a big old knapsack full of secrets and problems of his own. Orin is the hottie soul sucker who is head over heels in love with Breena and is not the least bit afraid to show it. Did I mention the chemistry between these two?! Scorching! Both have endearing characteristics and mind-blowing personalities so I do not envy Breena the decision between the two – if there is a decision!
Breena has grown up a product of foster care. She has been abused and has never known what love and safety feel like. Now that she is old enough to be on her own, she takes it upon herself to do whatever she can to get custody of her young foster sister, Jenny. Breena is a strong and likable character who knows where her loyalties lie. The only downside with Breena (as well as what held me back from giving this a total 5 star rating) was the fact that she did get on my nerves a bit. When it came to Orin and Myles she seemed a bit “flighty” and I did find myself wanting to smack her a time or two. Otherwise I loved the caring and compassion that she showed Jenny, the strength that she showed dealing with some pretty harsh situations and overall I really liked her character.
In addition to some steamy writing vibes, Witch Way to Turn has humor, suspense, romance, drama and family dynamics. The action is constant and there is never a dull moment. When I began reading, I found myself instantly sucked into the story and each of the characters and cringed when I had to put the book aside for whatever reason. I do have to say, however, that this is a story that is very quick and easy to get back into after sitting it aside. The writing style of Karen Y. Bynum is excellent and the story is very tight and smoothly written. There were a few surprises thrown in here and there and this took the story to an entirely new level. The ending had me drooling for more and the next in the series cannot come soon enough for me! For lovers of paranormal and/or Young Adult, Witch Way to Turn is definitely for you!! I do have to say that I would recommend it for older YA readers in the age range of 16+ just for the fact that there is a lot of sexual tension and sexual aspects.
Favorite quote: “They’re almost as subtle as you.” Breena swished the ice in her drink around with her straw.
Hell’s bells. Tactful, Breena. Real smooth.
Open mouth, insert Orin.
Omigod. She did not just think that.
She took another gulp of her ice tea to give her mouth something to do.
