Romancing the Blog: Romancing the Book

Romancing the BookTo wrap up our Romancing the Blog event, I thought I’d let the RtB staff turn the tables on me (Jen) for an interview.  Enjoy learning a little more about me…

Q: If you could be any character in a book who would it be and why?
A: You know, this is actually a pretty difficult question.  I don’t have this “all-time favorite” book or character.  It’s crazy… I know.   But as I sit here wracking my brain and scanning my shelves, I realize that I could never cut it as a heroine in a romantic suspense or a paranormal (although I love to read both) and I enjoy my technology and such too much to want to be a character from a historical.    To be honest, I’d just love to spend a day at Hogwarts and rub elbows with Harry, Ron and Hermoine.  I wouldn’t even have to *be* one of them… LOL

Q: Where would you love to travel that you haven’t been to before?
A: Growing up a military brat, my family spent a little time overseas and my parents love to travel, so we were drug along.  Unfortunately I didn’t appreciate visiting all those castles and cathedrals and such as a kid.  After college, I was lucky enough to visit London, which was AWESOME!  The place highest on my list of places to visit is New Zealand.  I’m in love with all the scenic photos I’ve seen from there and want to see if first hand some day… and of course it doesn’t hurt that they speak English there.

Q: How did you come up with the idea of RtB? How long between coming up with the idea until it came to fruition?
A:  Actually, the blogging thing wasn’t my idea, but was the brain child of my friend Jessica.  She had been talking about starting a blog, but didn’t know what to write about.  When she finally settled on books, she asked me if I wanted to do it with her since we read different genres.  The blog was originally Book Talk with J & J as we just wrote the random review of books we had picked up and liked.  About 9 months later, we decided to start interviewing authors and that’s when the blog started moving towards specializing in romance books.  November is *technically* our anniversary and we’ll be 5.  But I always celebrate in July since that’s when we started picking up readers and evolving to where we are today.  So, I say we just turned 4.  🙂

Q: If you were told you could only read once type of romance genre going forward which would you pick and why?
A:  Historical romance.  I’m a complete history buff and when you mix in the romance, I’m in heaven.  And there are so many different eras that can be written about, I wouldn’t ever get bored!

Q: Have you ever considered writing a book? If so, what do you think the premise would be? genre?
A:  Years ago I thought about it, wrote about a chapter and then realized that I don’t have the muse or actual desire to write.  It was a start of a mystery.

Q: Besides reading or blogging what’s your favorite hobby?
A:  Hmmm… I love sports.  I season tickets to my local hockey team.  As I’m writing this, I’m watching the Olympics. I can watch just about any sport… except golf.  *shiver*

I also have a huge postcard collection and welcome donations to it.  🙂  I started that collection when living in Germany and doing the aforementioned traveling.  A few years back I did some trading, but then blogging took over my life and now I just get cards when I go somewhere or friends and family pick some up while they’re on the road.

Oh, and I also play music.  I do play the piano, but that’s a behind the doors thing for me as I get real nervous when someone is watching/listening and then turn all thumbs.  I also sing in my church’s praise team and choir.  And I also play handbells.  Video of me playing handbells can be seen on my YouTube channel, where you’d also be treated to some marimba music from my church (I don’t play those… but my niece and nephew do!).

Q: What was your favorite subject in school?
A:  In high school, it was probably math.  It was easily my best subject.  And nerd that I am, I was on the math team all 4 years of high school.  In college, I bounced around classes and majors until I discovered history.  My favorite class in college was one solely on the Civil War.

Q: What color is your hair this week?
A:  Haha!  This is a running joke with the review staff.  Since I color my hair monthly to cover the gray (I’m way to young to have as much gray as I have), they are often http://romancing-the-book.com/wp-admin/update-core.phpguessing what color I’m going to do next.  And I’m extremely lucky to have an awesome stylist who likes to play with color and doesn’t charge me an arm and a leg to do it.  So for your viewing pleasure, I’ve created a slideshow of some of my hair colors over the last couple years.  And for the record, right now it’s just black (which is not natural, brown is).

Thank you for stopping by the blog today as I field some questions from the staff.  I’m more than willing to answer more questions, so shoot.  And if you leave a question for me, don’t forget to enter our Romancing the Blog event contest via the Rafflecopter form below.  Since the contest is open until Friday, run back to some of our past guests to learn about their blogs and enter the contest by commenting on their pages.  The complete list of participating blogs can be found here.

Great interview Jen. Loved that you used many of the questions I left for you. Guess I should get into this side of things more often.
Loved your hair video – all I can say is wow!
Learned quite a few things about you too which is always a nice treat.

You didn’t realize I had that many colors, did you? And there are a few missing from that as well because I couldn’t get good pictures of the color. lol

Great interview! I also don’t have an all time favorite book/character. I always have a hard time answering this kind of question 🙂

I don’t have much time to read these days.

When the blog started, I was reading a book a day, easily. At the time I was working in a church office and had a lot of free time on my hands as I sat around waiting for the phone to ring. lol

But since then I’ve gotten a new job and am working a lot of overtime on top of the blog being quite busy… I probably average 1-2 books a week now. Sometimes I can get more in when I’m in the right mood.

I used to have a supervisor who joked that if I had 2 days off in a row, there was no telling what color my hair would be, LOL. I have never had any really cool colors, but the purple streaks are nice (I might have to do that sometime)

I love RtB. It’s a great blog. It is so easy to use and the reviews are great. BTW, I like the purple hair the best. Suble but still there (if you know what I mean).

  5. Great interview, Oh Fearless Leader! I think we all know what to send you for your birthday and Christmas – postcards!

I think I can safely say that on behalf of the rest of the staff here at RtB, we truly appreciate you and all that you do for us and for the readers of this blog. You’re an amazing leader and it’s a privilege to know you!
