Romancing the Blog: Parajunkee’s View

Today we begin our 3 week event where we’re featuring a few of our fellow book bloggers.  If you’d like to see our schedule of guests, check out

To kick off the event, we welcome Rachel from Parajunkee’s View as our first guest.

Rachel: Hello everyone, first I would like to thank Jen for having me here, for Romancing the Blog, what a cool idea. I look forward to checking out all the other great blogs that are participating.

Jen: How did you get into blogging?

Rachel: I actually just answered this in my SpineBender feature last week. {SpineBenders is a new group that a few of us book bloggers formed, a collab YouTube channel.} If you want the long version, LOL, you can view it there. But, the short version, revolves around my old job as a Graphics Manager for a large corporation. We had a large amount of clients that were interested in setting up blogs as part of their marketing strategy and since blogging was unknown to most of us Marketing minions, I had to figure it out quickly. I learn best by doing and figuring it out along the way, so Parajunkee’s View was a test. I had been reviewing as a novice on and received some negative feedback for a particular snarky review that I wrote. A Blog to showcase my book reviews seemed like the perfect outlet for learning how to Blog and to have an area where I didn’t have to worry about trolls and people using my reviews to push their own affiliate links. I had no idea about the Book Blogging community, or the fact that authors would actually contact you for promotion. I only expected to ever gain a few readers, if I was lucky. It is funny how expectations change.

Jen: What makes your blog unique in a large sea of book blogs?

Rachel: I think what makes my blog unique is my voice. But, I think that is what makes us all unique. I try to embed humor into all of my writing and I think it works well for what I do. I also think my tutorials and new blog promotion tools, sets the PJV apart from the rest. I’m not just a Book Blog, I’m also a designer/tutorial blog, so I put great care into the layout and look, along with promotion of information that I think other Book Bloggers will find helpful.

Jen: What’s been the highlight of your blogging experience?

Rachel: Probably attending RT2012. That was amazing and I had so much fun. I didn’t know before blogging that they had these romance conferences, or book expos. I managed to sit down with awesome authors and the fact that I had a few recognize my blog name had me over the top excited. Just being a part of the publishing community and blogging community has been phenomenal. I’ve always been sort of an outsider. The girl that sits by herself at lunch and reads or the odd graphics girl who is always talking about some vampire or faerie, or the latest Mac OS. Book people get me. I love that.

Jen: Please tell me about you blog and the people behind it.

Rachel: Parajunkee’s View can be found at

It started out as a review blog, that specialized in mainly Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance, but has since expanded to review most of the speculative fiction genres, science fiction, fantasy and young adult books. We have also recently added a Contemporary Romance section for the weekends. I, Rachel or to some Parajunkee, have run the blog mainly by myself for the last three years. Running about two to three reviews a week and then the tutorial posts, called Book Blogging 101 on Thursday, along with social hops on Thursdays and Fridays to promote following other book blogs and their twitter and Facebook pages.

It has been a lot of hard work setting up the blog and maintaining it. Luckily, I do work from home as a Freelance Designer, now, so it has become easier in the last year. Even though my designs seem to have become rather popular and my free time has gone way down.

I mentioned, also, that we added a Contemporary Romance section to the blog, which wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for Patti. Patti is the newest member of Parajunkee’s View and she is the star of the Romancing the Weekend with Patti section of Parajunkee’s View. Swing by on Saturdays to meet Patti.

And finally, if you have a taste for romance, or the paranormal, swing by and check out Parajunkee’s View. Even if you are just looking for promotional tricks, or a way to gain new blog followers, we have that too.

Thanks for hosting me today, Jen.

  7. I think it’s great that we take time out of reviewing and interviewing authors to find out more about our fellow bloggers. Great interview guys and what a great way for people to find new blogs to follow.

  8. Great interview! I’ve always liked to read author interviews but blogger interviews are great as well! I’ve seen Rachel’s designs on multiple blogs I follow, as a book lover and someone very new to the design/blogging stuff, Parajunkee is a wonderful resource.
