Interview: Priya Ardis

Jen: YA author Priya Ardis is making a blog tour stop at Romancing the Book to tell us about her release, My Boyfriend Merlin. Priya, will you share a short bio with us? Where can you be found online?

Priya: I love stories of all kinds–but especially the gooey ones that make your nose leak and let your latte go cold. My young adult novel, My Boyfriend Merlin, comes from a childhood of playing too much She-Ra and watching too much Spock. I started my first book at sixteen, writing in notebooks on long train rides. While reading My Boyfriend Merlin or most books, I recommend pajamas first and a pumpkin spice anything for taste.

My favorite Arthurian piece is the poem The Lady of Shalott by Lord Alfred Tennyson and a gorgeous song by Loreena McKennitt.

A hopeless romantic, I’m a longtime member of the Romance Writer’s of America.

Jen: Please tell us about My Boyfriend Merlin.

Priya: My Boyfriend Merlin is a YA paranormal romance set in today’s world. Merlin goes to high school to recruit Candidates to pull the sword from the stone—one of them his ex-girlfriend.

In this modern Arthurian, 17-year-old student president Arriane, akaRyan, DuLac finds out her badass biker boyfriend, Matt, is a little older than he was letting on. By a few eons.

In fact, he is really Merlin–the Merlin, King Arthur’s Merlin, the greatest wizard who ever lived. But Ryan’s not impressed. Tired of being a relationship loser, she’d rather kick his legendary behind.

Sure, the world has been crazy ever since the sword and the stone fell out of the sky like a meteor. But despite gruesome gargoyles, a new world of magic, and the guy driving her crazy, Ryan knows that family is everything. Will Merlin sacrifice hers to save the world? Will she be able to stop him?

Jen: What is it about YA books that appeal to you?

Priya: I love coming of age stories, the confusion of first love and how everything seems so out of control. It’s a fascinating time in our lives and even though I’m past it I still remember the highs and lows during that stage. I hope that my writing while entertaining and being escapist also helps those who read it by identifying with the characters and their situations. Sometimes the world can seem so dark and great books can be the beacons.

Jen: Do you have any “must-haves” while writing?

Priya: Look for me at you local coffee shop. I’m sure there’s a writer (like me) lurking there!

Jen: Who has influenced you as a writer?

Priya: In YA, my favorite writer has to be Robin McKinley. I adored Beauty. What a wonderful story for a girl whose way too much into fairy tales. The series that affected me the most, however, has to be Alanna by Tamora Pierce. I love the sword and sorcery bit—hence my own foray into the world of a modern day Merlin….

And I watch a lot of Disney. (Yes, still!) Recently I’ve been into the show Once Upon A Time.

I soak up stories of fairy tales, legends, and superheroes. Somewhere along the way, I decided to put my own spin on them.

Jen: What’s up next for you?

Priya: Currently, I am finishing up the next book in the My Merlin series to be released in early April. In My Boyfriend Merlin, Ryan comes a long way but there are plenty of challenges ahead. Book 2, My Merlin Awakening, asks—If you haven’t broken the rules, have you really lived? So stay tuned!

You’ll be able to add My Merlin Awakening to your TBR soon on Goodreads.

Jen: Do you have anything that you’d like to ask our readers?

Priya: In My Boyfriend Merlin, I styled Merlin with the same traits and vulnerabilities as any modern superhero. Who’s you favorite superhero? And would you date one?
