Interview & Contest: Cecilia Gray

Jen: We are happy to welcome Cecilia Gray to Romancing the Book. Cecilia, please share a short bio with us.

Cecilia: My official bio is:

Cecilia Gray lives in Oakland where she reads, writes and breaks for food.

She also pens her biography in the third person. Like this. As if to trick you into thinking someone else wrote it because she is important. Alas, this is not the case.

Unofficially, I’m a girl who loves to read, loves Jane Austen, loves teen romance, and loves mashups of the things that I love.

Jen: Can you tell us about Fall For You and where the idea came from?
Cecilia: Fall For You is the debut title of my Jane Austen Academy series. In the series, mysterious new owners buy the all-girls Jane Austen Academy and decide to add boys into the mix. Each book follows a different heroine, based on a heroine from one of Jane Austen’s six novels, as she navigates life, love, and the changes at the Academy.

Fall For You is Lizzie’s story. She’s inspired by Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice so she’s witty, smart and ready to lock horns with Dante, the sexy but emotionally distant new guy, as she struggles to save her beloved Academy’s traditions.

Jen: Why do you write YA? Is there a genre you’d like to try, or one you would never write? Why?

Cecilia: I write young-adult because some of my favorite books are young-adult books! The Hunger Games series, The Book Thief, How I Live Now – these are the titles I go back to when I want a comfort read.

I also write historical regency-inspired romance and paranormal chick lit for adults, but the material is very flirty and fun. I probably couldn’t write anything too dark and erotically sexy, because my mind just doesn’t go there.

Jen: Do you have a writing routine?

Cecilia: Yes! It’s called “do I have a spare five minutes?” I end up writing while waiting for other things to happen. I also write a lot at night when I stop getting work-related emails.

Jen: What are some of your favorite authors? What are you reading now?

Cecilia: I’d mentioned Suzanne Collins earlier – she is definitely a fav. I also love Sara Zarr and Kristin Cashore. I just finished The Storyteller by Antonia Michaelis which is a darkly beautiful modern fairy tale, and am digging into The Apothecary by Maile Maloy – a middle grade which a dozen people have recommended to me.

Jen: Where can you be found online?

Cecilia: Way too many places!
My website:
I’m also at Goodreads…Librarything…being online is apparently my second job.

Jen: What’s next for you?

Cecilia: The next book in The Jane Austen Academy Series, which will be the Sense and Sensibility inspired story.
