Blogoversary Day 17: Kristal McKerrington

Jen: Today our blogoversary celebration continues as we welcome Kristal McKerrington to Romancing the Book.  Kristal, will you please share a short bio with us?

Kristal: Of course. I’m a twenty two year old writer from Scotland, who believes in breaking new ground and making a huge difference to people’s lives through the art of word.

I’m now a 8 times published Author with XoXo Publishing. My works can be found on Amazon, ARE, 9 Clouds Publishing and on XoXo Publishing Store.

Jen: Tell us about A Different Life: Three Lane Highway and where is can be purchased.

Kristal: A Different Life: Three Lane Highway is a Young Adult Wrestling Romance book set in the modern times. It follows a writer named Layla, who bursts into the Wrestling world to save her ideals career, met with a hostile locker room and many hurdles trying to through her off her path. Can she survive the front lines and survive falling in love with three men?

The books currently available at Amazon, ARE and XoXo Publishing’s Store.

Jen: At what age did you discover writing? When where you first published? Tell us your call story.

Kristal: I discovered writing when my Auntie came to the Ward to give me a surprise visit. I wrote her story, this was also the same day I had seen WCW Wrestling for the first time. From that day I had been inspired to write Wrestling fictional stories. Over the coming years, being an author was a very much ‘retirement plan’ idea. Not something I was going to do as a career. After 8 weeks in the Hospital and seeing ‘The Hardy Show’ for the first time in my life, I set about writing. Back in September 2010 I became a published author for the first time with my Hip Hop book dedicated to my friend I lost in a car crash, ‘Stuart’.

Jen: Are there any other writers, published or not, in your family?

Kristal: My Great Grandmother was a story teller, she became well known for her lengthy stories. All around me growing up was story tellers, where I grew up you survived in our playground if you were a really good story teller, good liar, really good at sports or were able to really fight. I became a good story teller fast.

Jen: Do you have a writing routine?

Kristal: Yes I do and its essential for my writing. I will either run a hot bath and settle in there for a while or I will make a cup of tea or coffee then get stuck in. Good music, a hot drink and that is me set at the computer for the next few hours at least or a good pen and paper then I will be in the bath till there is no hot water left.

Jen: Do you struggle with deadlines? How do you deal with the pressure?

Kristal: Nether bother me, its a great motivator for me. I just put my head down and get on with it. Apart of being a good Author and Writer is that you need to be able to deal with pressure as well as having a thick skin or your just not going to make it.

My secret with dealing with pressure is really simple, I mediate, I go to classes of Yoga, Tia Chi and Pilate’s where I just connect with myself and let the pressure run off me like water. If the pressure is really intense then I will go out for the day then I’m all ready to tackle it again.

Jen: What is it about the romance genre that appeals to you?

Kristal: The ability that you can bring two of the least likely people together and you can, because you have this licence too. Through this genre we light the flame in women’s hearts and in some ways we are educating men on what a woman wants. There is so many dreams that are sparked and inspired through romance. We really take our audiences to a whole new world and we show them the really good side to life. We show them that anything is really possible. Nothing else could appeal to me more.

Jen: Do you become attached to your characters and have a hard time letting them go, or are you happy that their story is told and you can move on?

Kristal: There is some characters that creep me out sometimes so I’m happy to see them go. However there is characters such as ‘Layla, Marie and Kathy’ (From A Different Life Series) who will break my heart when there story ends or ‘Carla’ (from Shetlands Immortals). I think the more attached or the more scary your characters are too you the more that is transferred onto the audience. If you don’t love them and are sad to see the story end then the audience wouldn’t be.

Jen: What five authors or people, past or present, have been important to your writing? What question or comment have you always wanted to say to them?

Kristal: Catherine Cookson was a huge influence on my writing career and she was apart of the reason why I got into Writing. I would ask her, ‘in the modern age would you write other genres, if you had the chance?’. Rachel Caine, saved my writing career last year when I was about to give up on the writing world entirely. She told me that she would help me if she could and to keep your head up high cause you would make it in the end if you were determine enough. I would ask her ‘would you like to do that book tour now?’ Marianna Curely was another huge influence on my career and I would ask her ‘will you ever write another paranormal/magic book again?’ Shane Helms since he got me back writing Wrestling romance themed books and I would ask him. ‘What to hang out sometime?’ I would ask him that since he has been a lot of fun to follow as a fan and an inspiration to go out and follow my dreams. Gina C, the owner of XoXo Publishing, since it was her that got me started. I wouldn’t ever be able to say thank you enough. My question to her would be ‘When can we grab that cup of coffee?’ Last, but never least I have to say I would say Sherrilyn Kenyon influenced me and I would ask her ‘Would you read my Shetlands Immortals series, would love your thoughts on it.’

Jen: What did you do to celebrate your first book?

Kristal: We went out for dinner, just myself and my boyfriend to an nice Italian Restaurant.

Jen: What do you do in your free time?

Kristal: I meditate, read, go out on the motorbike and spend as much time with my family as I can.

Jen: What’s next for you?

Kristal: More books, maybe doing something in the Wrestling Industry and heck maybe some day a movie.

Jen: Where can you be found on the web?

Kristal: You can find me on a whole list of sites. I’m everywhere. Most importantly you can find me on ‘‘ ‘‘ ‘‘ ‘‘ ‘‘ and at Spiff Box ‘‘.
